4. My Mom Passed Away A Month Ago To This Day
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 05:31 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I really do not want to be hurt again and I don't think I will be...I'm having a victory party and some of her friends are coming...Her best friends were an African American couple...We are white...The woman said my mom was like a grandmother to her...

I liked Hillary a lot but I was mesmerized by what Obama represents...To me it's a redemptive moment for our nation...

8. I told an elderly white lady
at our local Obama HQ yesterday that I had been hoping all my life to be able to vote for either a woman or a black for President in my lifetime but never thought it would happen. She said she and her husband were just talking about that a few days ago.

Make no mistake, there is still fear and hatred of this kind of change but Obama seems to be the right person to confront that fear and defeat it by showing them the truth through steady leadership and calm resolve.

10. The One Thing Among Many I Loved About My Parents
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 05:57 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Is that they taught me to color blind...Not color blind as in the majority has no responsibility to the minority to try to redress past grievances but to see we are all the same with the same potential for good , if given the chance...

I can honestly say I never heard them make a disparaging comment about anybody because of their race, religion, ethnicity, et cetera...

When we moved to Florida from New York in 1970 Florida was a very different place then that it is now... The first day on his new job my dad instinctively sat down with his black co-workers to have lunch...They told him if he did the white workers would ostracize him...

When I was about twelve years old we used to go visit his black friends from work...Florida was very segregated then...They had kids about my age and some younger...I remember putting the four year old on my shoulder and walking to the store...I was the only white kid for miles...It was wild...

13. You're bringing back memories
I moved from Chicago to Mississippi in the early 60's and later we went to Florida. Talk about culture shock. A lot of people didn't know how to take me (and my big mouth), but oddly enough, a lot of people were receptive. They just weren't used to hearing a different viewpoint.

Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 06:17 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
This was when the drinking age was eighteen...My friend brought his black friend in...One guy said " who bought the n-word in ?" The fight started in the bar and ended up outside...It was like something you would have seen on Bonanza with Little Joe...

19. Shit!
I was working at the Dairy Bar in Pensacola (ice cream, not booze) in 1964. Most of us all went to college together, including two black brothers. We all socialized together without 2nd thought. Our boss sat us down and gave us a lecture about how our interaction was perceived by others. She was far from racist, pointing out her experiences being Jewish. We were incredulous and pretty much ignored her advice, but her words stayed with us. Talk about loss of innocence.

There were others, but that one stuck out.

22. We moved to Ms in my junior year
Moved from the Chicago area, so it was like a different planet. It was so unlike anything we were used to. Because I didn't know any better, I ran my mouth a lot. Got away with it because I was a girl. I know now racism was alive and well in the north, but in the south it was so blatant, one couldn't ignore it, and I didn't.

When I wasn't obnoxiously outraged, I was absolutely heartbroken. So many times. Hopefully I'll live to see the end of this. Sadly, I thought I already had.

27. The segregation was more subtle
There were no "whites" or "colored" signs, but they definitely were kept in their place or side of town. I never saw blatant racism until we moved south and looking back, it was probably a good experience. I grew up really fast.

30. Never having lived in the south
I cannot speak to that overt racism but I have seen and heard plenty of it here in Ohio.

I hear it when phone banking for Obama.
I hear it when a coworker calls another a N****r Lover.

But I'm starting to see the flip side more and more. Our town had an annual event yesterday where the kids trick or treated through the downtown business district around noon and the businesses gave out candy. I worked the door at our Obama HQ and saw many whites and blacks together as couples and friends and all colors of kids walking together and just enjoying the day and each other without a thought to race.

It will come, Obama will help.

35. I see so little racism anymore
That is why I am so shocked by the horrible things people are saying. Where I live now, it is very diversified. Racism is so rare and never tolerated here. The fact that someone would even use the term N-lover in this day and age is unbelievable to me.

I told my son the other day that this is the major turning point - this will be the end once and for all of racism in our society. There will still be a few who will harbor their fear-based bigotry, but they'll learn to put a lid on it. Eventually, even they will give it up. I've seen it before.

2. Very good, thank you.
I think that both Barack Obama and Joseph Biden are doing extremely well. John McCain has faded. And Sarah Palin has become as divisive and destructive as I had expected; her raging personality disorder is on full display, and it's the republicans who have to deal with it.

I'm a general worry wart, and have also struggled with clinical depression for decades.

I am trying to avoid bad juju like Fux News, and other negative input, and concentrate on the positive.

20. OMG, Crying here - "Change Gonna Come" takes me right back to the 60s--a lot of remembered heartache
but a lot of hope!

Just found a link for some of the younger crowd: in wikipedia: 1960s

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960s

The 60s shaped my life in many ways. Half teasingly, our 36 y.o. son "blames" all of society's ills today on my "liberal, hippie generation" who became parents. He just doens't realize how different his life would be if the turmoil of the 60s HADN'T occurred.

25. You're bringing tears to my eyes
Hey, I'm listening to Cat Stevens!

I've reminded my kids many, many times how far we've come and how different life was back then. Without the reminders, they would take it all for granted, not realizing how easy it would be to lose it all or what it took to come to this point in history.

Hey, send your son to my house! We'll clue him in.

28. Oh Shit!
I love that song.

In the early seventies, we were traveling in a VW van and stopped in Myrtle Beach so my husband could work at an amusement park. The Tilt-a-whirl was playing Cat Stevens night and day. I've been hooked every since.

Also love Father and Son.

37. Ya know, I have honestly thought about posting the topic for the old timers from the 60s--to see if
everyone else who lived through it has been as emotional as I have during this campaign. This election has been so, so bittersweet for me--a lot of painful memories, but more than that a renewed HOPE like I have not felt in years!
