Obama is the better choice for troubled times ahead (Youngstown OH Vindicator)
Published:Sunday, October 26, 2008

... Today, we are forced to conclude that Barack Obama is less tied to the failed polices of the past than is John McCain ...

Obama can’t pull the nation out of NAFTA, but he’s declared that NAFTA has not fulfilled its promise to America and that some of its provisions should be renegotiated. Nations that use domestic content laws to discourage imports should not have unfettered access to our markets. Likewise, tax laws can be recast in ways that encourage companies to invest in America and to create jobs here, rather than help companies move jobs off shore ...

The financial turmoil on Wall Street and the ways in which it is trickling down to Main Street have prompted allusions to the Great Depression. There is reason to believe that we are on the brink of a deep recession. But no one knows what lies a month or a year down the road or when a turning point will be reached. It is, however, certain that the nation did not get where it is — with trembling markets and dwindling jobs — in a year or two, and it will not emerge from this dark and scary place overnight.

Of the candidates in this race, Obama has the youth, the energy, the education and the flexibility that will be needed for the next four years. John McCain performed with distinction in military service and in Congress. We are not departing in any degree from honoring that service in expressing our belief today that the country will be best served by the election of Barack Obama.

The crazy congressman with the hairpiece who eventually went to prison? He was a riot.

6. "Gentleman Jim" Trafficant(e)
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 05:40 AM by JohnnyRingo
He was the original maverick in congress, known for his "3 minute" speeches that railed against outsourcing. He switched parties to repub near the end, but if he were to be relaesed and allowed to run...He'd win here in a landslide.

It's kind of sad, because he switched because he was shunned by the party, and I think he was more talk than action. He was replaced by a much better democrat, Tim Ryan, who also does a fine rant.

Here is Ryan responding to the rumor that there could be an upcoming draft a few years ago:

10. I agree
But people here, especially older folks have an almost O'Reilly like passion for him where they think he was watching out for them. He spoke out against outsourcing at a time the jobs were moving south of the border at their highest rate.

Unfortunately, that's all he did. That was enough however, to cement him as the Congressman who spoke to the powers that be in the minds of those who voted for him year after year. Many still feel he was "set up" by the IRS because he was too close to upsetting the apple cart. (as if)

While I felt his speeches were entertaining at first, I later became annoyed and embarrassed by him, and agreed with the Democratic party to cut him loose. Tim Ryan is ten times the statesman he was, as he not only talks the talk, he knows how to bring home the pork too. The kind that will get an airport named after him some day.

Jim Trafficant(e) dropped the "e" from the end of his name when it was made public that he was related to a prominent mob family in Youngstown. Somehow, that worked.

3. This is one of my local papers
Mahoning County voted 2 to 1 in '04 for Kerry

So did Trumbull, but I wonder this time. I've encountered a lot of racism this year (sorry, but true). I hope union workers who lost their jobs in the last 8 years rise above it all and see more of the same w/McCain.

The Warren Tribune Chronicle is very conservative, considering it's rust belt roots. This is traditionally among the most liberal areas of Ohio.

11. In the late 80s in PA, I saw a number of "Reagan Dems" who lost their jobs
rise above it to support Jesse Jackson's campaign. They had some help getting to that point, but they got there. Nothing beats people-to-people
