Dobson: Obama could cause nuked Israel, strikes on 4 U.S. cities, end of Boy Scouts, gay marriage...
Christian right intensifies attacks on Obama

ERIC GORSKI and RACHEL ZOLL | October 24, 2008 09:46 PM EST | AP

Terrorist strikes on four American cities. Russia rolling into Eastern Europe. Israel hit by a nuclear bomb. Gay marriage in every state. The end of the Boy Scouts.

All are plausible scenarios if Democrat Barack Obama is elected president, according to a new addition to the campaign conversation called "Letter from 2012 in Obama's America," produced by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family Action.

The imagined look into the future is part of an escalation in rhetoric from Christian right activists who are trying to paint Obama in the worst possible terms as the campaign heads into the final stretch and polls show the Democrat ahead.

Although hard-edge attacks are common late in campaigns, the tenor of the strikes against Obama illustrate just how worried conservative Christian activists are about what should happen to their causes and influence if Democrats seize control of both Congress and the White House.

"It looks like, walks like, talks like and smells like desperation to me," said the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell of Houston, an Obama supporter who backed President Bush in the past two elections. The Methodist pastor called the 2012 letter "false and ridiculous." He said it showed that some Christian conservative leaders fear that Obama's faith-based appeals to voters are working.

Like other political advocacy groups, Christian right groups often raise worries about an election's consequences to mobilize voters. In the early 1980s, for example, direct mail from the Moral Majority warned that Congress would turn a blind eye to "smut peddlers" dangling pornography to children.

"Everyone uses fear in the last part of a campaign, but evangelicals are especially theologically prone to those sorts of arguments," said Clyde Wilcox, a Georgetown University political scientist. "There's a long tradition of predicting doom and gloom."

2. James Dobson is a racist
<snip>
Lift High the Cross: Where White Supremacy and the Christian Right Converge

Peter Kerry Powers
By Ann Burlein. Duke University Press, 282 pp., $18.95 paperback.

ANN BURLEIN OPENS her book by quoting Virgil Griffin, Wizard of the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Griffin exhorts others to embrace a racist politics not for the sake of power, but for the sake of the powerless: "I'm not in this organization for Virgil Griffin. I don't fight the courts in Washington, D.C. and other states to win my rights; I want to win rights for that little boy right there. If you don't stand up and demand your rights, and get in the streets and fight for them, they will have no rights. Your children, your grandchildren, nor mine will have no rights?

Burlein's sharp insight is that the insidious politics of the racist right employs the very ideals and political rhetoric that most Americans readily embrace. An assistant professor of religion and philosophy at Meredith College, Burlein makes her case by comparing two groups: Scriptures for America, a white supremacist organization run by Pete Peters, and Focus on the Family, the well-known conservative evangelical ministry headed by James Dobson. She examines the ways in which both groups deploy a politics of nostalgia and of the body to motivate their adherents.

This politics of the body encompasses both the individual body envisioned as a temple of the Holy Spirit and the national body politic envisioned as God's temple in need of cleansing. Thus, both Peters and Dobson invoke the same biblical image to call Christians to articulate their concern for their children by embracing the romance of male protectionism. In this dangerous and deceitful age, the story goes, men must protect the innocence of their families by taking the country back from the secular humanists who, since the 1960s, have been using pop culture to surreptitiously reprogram the sexual and gender mores of young people. This reprogramming is part of a conspiracy to annihilate all memory of Christianity from the national body politic.

5. I hate to keep repeating the "He's not one of us" mantra...
...but, as a Christian, he's not one of us, or I'm not one of them...take your pick.

There really are Christians who feel that as long as you are not hurting yourself or someone else, either physically or emotionally, and as long as you;re not breaking the law, pretty much anything you want to do in this all-too-short life to make yourself happy is A-OK with me.

It is tough for me, because I do have Evangelicals that I call friends. They have done amazing things for me. They have given me referrals to clients (I am self-employed) that resulted in my being able to pay the rent in the nick of time.

But they also sign up for the Dobson crap. My challenge is to not endorse it (I don't) and not judge them for the fact that they do (ditto).

My favorite quote on life in general, from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and in intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

12. He knows who (and what) he is. You're right.
The problem we've had for the last two presidential terms is that Bush has this Oedipal thing going on, and on TOP of that, he's the "number two favorite son" behind his brother Jeb.

Obama, on the other hand...in the final two weeks before one of the most critical presidential elections of our time...took a time out to take care of business, to visit his ailing grandmother. Then he came ROARING back, without missing a beat, and laid McCain to WASTE in Nevada today.

Yes, you are right...Obama is the manifestation of Emerson's quote.

And he's going to be our next poresident.

17. I am a "permanent by mail" voter. My ballot goes to the Post Office on Monday.
I LOVE that "permanent by mail" thing. Not that the local polling places haven't been convenient...they most certainly have...but that "by mail" ballot is a thing of beauty.

14. And, as an American, I have to repeat...
"He is not one of us." Even putting his dominionist pseudo-religious views aside, that still leaves fear-monger, racist, homophobe, and superciliously judgmental assmunch.

It's hard to be a Christian. Way too hard for the likes of Dobson. He thinks "Do unto others..." and "Love thy neighbor..." do not apply to him.

10. No, Dobson, Nuking Israel is your pal Hagee's wet dream
Remember Hagee wants every Jew sent back to Israel so they can all get nuked except for 144,000 male virgins who will convert to Jesusbots. I wonder if there will be a special dispensation from Hagee for LIEberman to be one of those 144,000?

19. I don't know what's scarier..
Dobson's general all-round whipping up of paranoia, or his equating gay marriage with nuclear war and terrorist attacks!

The scariest of all, I suppose, is that a significant number of people seem to take him seriously.

20. Although I expect nothing less from the radical right....
Lumping gay marriage in with a nuclear attack is just awful.

And at the rate we're going with National Guardsmen having to go to Iraq for 3 tours of duty...if McCain's hundred year war gets going...the Boy Scouts may be part of our next "surge."

It really is time for mainstream Christians to call out extremists in a big way ~ just as it's high time mainstream Muslims call out extremists.
