Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 01:54 AM by VolcanoJen
Most bands only get two songs; Coldplay came back to sing "Yellow" and that's the song where he yells "Barack Obama!" at the end. It was very moving; I really hope the west coast got to see it.

"Look at the stars, look how they shine for you"

And the "Mad Men" skits were hysterical!! Jon Hamm is dreamy. :loveya:

12. I spent a couple of hours with him, Gwenyth, and his band...
when they played Red Rocks here.

They were all terribly friendly...and Mr. Martin is one really funny guy. They asked me lots of questions about Red Rocks...were quite polite and engaging...and were more engaging then the majority of music artists I deal with (and I deal with a lot).

I didn't find him to be a douche.

Now...Jackson Browne...Eugene Hutz...those were douche bags.

on how bad the wind is.

What do I do? Well...I started in the industry over a decade ago as a runner. I then started doing stagehand work as well. Now I'm a stage manager at a major venue here in town. I have stage managed a few times at Red Rocks...starting this summer. Red Rocks doesn't have a devoted promoter...so they don't have a devoted stage manager. But the promoter I work for had me do Reggae on the Rocks and Punkfest this summer.

Coldplay was very excited to be playing on the anniversary of the famous U2 show at Red Rocks(1983-2003). I told them how my grandfather worked his way through medical school as a part of the CCC...and how he was a part of the crew that built the amphitheatre at Red Rocks. I was running for them. I was driving the 15p van. I had interaction with them through out the day...shuttling crew and band members back and forth from their hotel in downtown (The Monaco)...and running errands for their production.

I drove them all at the end of the show back to their hotel. They were all in a wonderful mood...telling me how fantastic our venue was and how they were so honored. Gwenyth was very nice (and breathtakingly beautiful). Chris was rapping out improvised dirty limericks and had the entire van in tears.

Eugene Hutz...very talented. He IS Gogol Bordello. Brilliant man. But just a really awful person. Called his band names continually during soundcheck. Called out our lighting guy in the middle of the show...over the mic...in front of 3600 people. Called him a "fucking idiot". Told him he should quit his job. Stormed of stage. Threw shit. Stormed back on stage in verbal tirade. Called his band more names. His band and crew approached me and my crew at the end of the show and apologized for him profusely. They said that that's just how Eugene is. They said he is a complete prick...and he is ALWAYS like that. He is never in a "down" moment. He's very angry...he hates people....and is a miserable person.

Which is a bummer...because I love Gogol Bordello's music. And after Everything is Illuminated...I really wanted to like the guy.

Jackson Browne....is very short...very Napoleonic...and can't keep his hands off the women at venues.

89. Twice we saw Ray Charles do that
During the show, in the middle of a freakin song, he stopped playing and berated one of the other players on stage. One time it was the drummer and another time a guitar player.

We were HUGE fans until we saw that TWICE. We never bought any more of his records after that and couldn't help but remember it when he died.

DH is a drummer so he was particularly offended by Ray's behavior.

Guess its been a long time since they've had a group that big and they were going to get as much out of them as possible.

Also, they are probably spreading themselves pretty thin lately with the Thursday night show and then Amy had her baby. They may have needed some filler.

106. One theory is it's because Amy Poehler gave birth yesterday:
http://www.hollywoodtoday.net/2008/10/26/coldplay-promotes-barack-obama-on-%e2%80%98saturday-night-live%e2%80%99/

"Coldplay went on four times during the hour-and-a-half program, instead of the standard two times for musical guests, possibly because regular cast member Amy Poehler had given birth earlier in the day. TV Guide reported Saturday that portions of the show had to be rewritten due to the baby boy’s arrival."

24. Wake UP, please...
When I travel abroad, I don't voice strong political opinions of any nation's internal politics, even if those politics affect me -- I'm a guest in their country. I'm a registered Democrat who lives in NYC and I still find this totally UNacceptable as an American citizen and SO SHOULD YOU.

Chris Martin, who is NOT a U.S. citizen and can't even vote, has no place using a live tv performance to influence our elections.

Regardless of who Americans are supporting in this election, it's way bad to condone this.

If Obama supporters were pissed that SNL scheduled Palin to appear so close to Election Day (even though SNL's bent plenty of sketches towards Obama), we should be even more offended as Americans that a foreigner got a massive say.

The show could've easily edited out Chris's live yell since the show's on a time delay, but SNL didn't have the moral balls to do it.

37. I am both...
....a native New Yorker and a registered Democrat. So, I don't need to be "obvious" as you put it. (And don't call me a troll).

Wrap your narrow mind around the idea that a progressive Democrat in NYC -- likely living in a far hipper part of the world than you -- who is pro-gay-rights, pro-choice, scared about the Supreme Court -- finds a non-U.S. citizen's public shout-out about our elections to be problematic.

Just because we want change doesn't mean we have to be total CLODS about unacceptable things on our side of the street.

And by the way, where did YOU grow up that you're over-compensating so much you feel you need to deny my background in order to de-legitimize a valid and innocuous point? Likely somewhere not as cosmopolitan and pretty oppressive. Have you ever even been to SNL in person? And not as a tourist, LOL. ...If you disagree, make a valid point, don't get personal and ignorant.

53. ...Honestly, that did cross my mind, too.
...Honestly, that did cross my mind, too.

And his children presumably are, too.

Ultimately, though, I feel like he's living in London with his family. If Gwyneth wants to yell "Barack" when she's in the U.S. or on SNL, herself, that's a different story. She should feel free of course to say whatever she wants when she's here (rather than going all Natalie Maines about it, abroad, lol.)

But, here's the thing --- I think that probably an American actually wouldn't yell "Barack" on SNL like that. I think most American performers would be more disciplined and subtle because they care about what's appropriate in our country. But Chris doesn't care. He's awesome and hot, but he doesn't really care about the U.S., per se, the way an American does. I know on the surface this may come across to some as xenophobic, but it's not at all. I think it's true.

If I had minor children and a platform like that, I wouldn't let anyone tell me I can't advocate for a president that will improve my children's future over one who will likely destroy it. His family, his right to advocate for them.

Oh really? Now the tables have turned. What hospital, lol? Take the train much, went to high school in the city?

Of course you don't preface your post with your background because you were making a point you knew most everyone'd agree with. Isn't that obvious? My point, by contrast, was likely going to get hazed by some people, so naturally I had to at least indicate that I truly wasn't coming from a conservative standpoint. You'd think you'd understand my obvious "need" in this case, to "put it out there".

Again, genuinely, I'm taking a break b/c I've got to ride my cheap-ass bike down the westside highway path to Stuy and back, and get some exercise before the sun goes down. I can't sit here all afternoon with such a very open-minded metropolitan person.

Barack's going to win, but that should make us MORE responsible, not less.

The American President is also the world leader. The others don't have a vote, but to deny them even a voice is totally ridiculous. That's what makes us arrogant...and UGLY AMERICANS.

41. Duh...
Duh... that's not what I'm saying. Yes, people are free to speak their minds whether it's saying they're for a candidate or for the KKK, 'intelligent' design and neo-nazis. Just because it's free doesn't mean it's appropriate.

You've totally missed the point because nobody said anything about arresting Chris Martin. SNL is also free -- free to exercise their first amendment rights about what they think is appropriate to say, too. And they should have.

I agree that the American President is the biggest leader of the world, so the world has a big stake in our elections. That said, we also have big stakes in other country's elections, personally and collectively. Yet we complain all the time if the US weighs in or influences these countries. So, let's be consistent in our ideals.

Lastly, it's too bad that if you were in a foreign country and had a forum as big as Chris did, that you ''wouldn't hesitate to voice" your opinion. You're not a citizen there, and really it's a pretty arrogant and lame thing to do. Hope you'll reconsider.

PS -- Someone on this page told me to F-off, which just makes everyone look bad and totally undermines his/her point.

US policies affect people worldwide and people should have a say. It's high time the US realize that stomping all over the planet is going to draw the ire and vocal protests of others.

I LIVE in another country part time. I say what I feel about the politics of the country in which I live, because the policies are a disaster sometimes AND the policies are often intertwined with the US's.

I understand your point, but the only way to effect real change IS to do the right thing and be civil, and trust that this will win out. You said "drastic", well Martin Luther King, Jr. succeeded best in effecting drastic changes. And by being real and taking the high road. BE the change you want to see, as Ghandi said. Yelling "Barack Obama" was shady and NOT appropriate. Time will march on from this point, the only thing we can do is behave rightly and that will lay the groundwork for change best.

42. WTF?
If a tape of Osama Bin Ladin, a foreign national, can influence our elections, then I really don't mind Chris Martin's statement on SNL.

Editing out content?

Sheesh.

44. WTF...
You think that tape of Osama Bin Laden influenced our elections at all?

I have news for you: Chris Martin's a lot more attractive, talented and influential.

And he wasn't yelling "Barack" from hiding somewhere across the world. Chris was in the middle of midtown. Let him do it from London.

Dude, lest you think "editing out content" is the same as book burning, you're wrong. It's not Chris' show. He can take out ads on the BBC.

45. Yeah, I do think that a tape of Osama Bin Ladin influenced prior elections
And considering that the United Kingdom followed George Bush into Iraq solely on the basis that the USA and the UK are strong allies, I am really ok with a 2 second statement by one of it's citizens.

58. Fundraisers
I believe both Hillary and Barack have had non-Americans hold fundraisers for them, and it's a problematic issue, yes. That said, holding private fundraisers in the U.S. is a different issue than what Chris Martins did. Apples and oranges. ...But fundraisers for a U.S. election should be held IN the U.S., rather than on foreign soil, so no Elton shouldn't have held it in London. The events were attended by American donors, at least.

I'm off to send Mr. Martin a hand-written snail mail letter thanking him for his shout out.

Editing for political content on a privately owned station is not the same as going to a public library and burning books (or somesuch like Palin did). If you can't make these important distinctions, you're a pretty bad analyst and voice for a healthy political environment.

I've gone to the UK and spoken my mind about their politics whenever asked, and many times when not asked. Your concept of how the world works is silly and your point of view decidedly righty. I mean the very idea of promoting censorship as the morally correct action is disgusting, just the idea of it.

...What if Steven Baldwin or some similar bone-head had shouted an ethnic slur? You're saying it's never okay to turn the sound off, when it's your own show? It's you who's sounding "righy" because you're being so absolutist.

Speaking your mind about the UK's politics is not the same as shouting it out on UK tv in front of millions of voters right before a decisive election. Also, my "concept of how the world works" -- namely that people should use a little humility and self-discipline when they're in a country to which they don't belong -- is not silly, it's called respect. I respect the places I travel to and I don't presume to know better than the people who live there. That's why everyone in the world hates us -- because we presume to know. Maybe you DON'T, and change starts with YOU.

I missed SNL last night and I really wanted to hear the Barack Obama shout out. Trying to find a clip via a Google search, I came across this familiar rant:

# 11. Jilly (AKA PURA VIDA???) Says:
October 26th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Regardless of who Americans are supporting in this election — Chris Martin, who is NOT a U.S. citizen and can’t even vote — has no place using a live tv performance to influence our elections. I’m a registered Democrat who lives in NYC and I still find this totally unacceptable as an American citizen and so should you.

If Obama supporters were pissed that SNL scheduled Sarah Palin for the show, even though SNL’s bent plenty of sketches towards Obama, they should be offended as Americans that a foreigner got a say.

They could’ve easily edited out Chris Martin’s live yell since the show’s on a time delay, but SNL didn’t have the moral balls to do it.

When I travel abroad, I don’t voice strong political opinions of a nations internal politics, even if it affects me — I’m a guest in their country.

92. It's an internet message board - a Democratic message board...
...and you are overwhelmingly in the minority on this issue. Here's an abridged referesher of the message board rule regarding this (assuming you read this already):

2. Who We Are: Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office.

Chris Martin wore an arm band that said "Obama" during the first two songs. At the end of his third song, he said "Barack Obama."

Why in god's name would you go through the trouble to join a Democratic message board merely to criticize the speaking of our nominee's name on a nationally televised TV show, REGARDLESS who spoke the name?

I give not a rat's ass WHERE Martin was born. Neither should you, UNLESS you came here specifically to cause trouble?

Thanks for the refresher. But yes, I'm aware. I didn't come to cause trouble, and you're right: I am "overwhelmingly in the minority on this issue." Hoping to find a few like-minded people, who are also supportive of progressive ideals & are Democrats, who can see the problem with what Chris Martin did from a macro standpoint.

As for the arm-band, I only read about it and I don't think a lot of tv viewers eyeballed it, but they all surely heard him shout. There are going to be other left-leaners out there who don't agree with you, but perhaps not on this string, evidently. Too much of a threat, unfortunately.

Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 04:01 PM by RichGirl
He really engages the audience....I like that. He often comes out to the nose bleed section which reminds me of how Obama will come outside an event to greet people who couldn't get in.

I think this song was written for Bush...post presidency. I find it very satisfying and inspiring:

Lyrics to Viva La Vida :
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
