I Went Canvassing Today
I was actually canvassing for a state house candidate in central Florida, and I was in an upscale area. I was distributing his literature, but also a "slate card" for all of the races/Dems on the ballot in my county. Anyway, I saw a lot of McCain/Palin yard signs- even in front of houses with registered Democrats. That bewildered me a little, but overall the signs just motivated me that much more.

However, one of the signs (I saw it several times) really annoyed me. It said, "Another FAMILY FOR McCAIN - PALIN"

Somehow, that just really bugged me. I'm married with no kids, and I just don't know why that pisses me off so much.

1. Dont mean to change the subject but tell me about "slate cards"?
Is it like a tally? My Dem chairman has been mad at the Obama organizer because we haven't been IDing for the local candidates. I would like to know how we can next time (too late now) so that the local Dems don't feel so left out of the IDing process.

3. No Problem
It's a shame that sometimes local parties and national campaigns get into these pissing matches. We all have the same goal, but sometimes there is this competition for volunteers. I try to alternate my volunteering.

Anyway, the slate cards we (my county's Democratic party) prepared are door hangers that list all of the races on the ballot and the Democrat(s) in each race. It also has the early voting locations and the positions we (the party) took on the ballot initiatives. To an extent, we (the local party and Obama campaign) have shared volunteers to help distribute this literature. So, if someone goes knocking on a door for Obama, they can also leave our slate card. Because there are issues with coordinating (federal election law) and we are targeting voters a little differently, there may be some overlap or gaps. On the whole, though, I sense a lot less friction between our local party and the Obama campaign than there was with the Kerry campaign.

Our party paid to have the cards/door hangers printed.

10. Oh thanks. I thought you had some technique for IDing local candidates.
...when you were IDing for Obama. Our Obama walk lists have only had our Governor and U.S. Congressman listed to ID.

11. We Have The Same Friction... But What We Did Is Make Up Packets
of our local candidates and when we canvassed, we gave them out. Not only that we actually boosted them. Only problem we had was getting back to the Obama headquarters later than most. We just told them we were "talking" him up!

The Obama people have been flown in from other states, I know of 3 teams and each one comes from another state. MA, OR & MI! They don't have any idea about the locals or what has gone on previously. They are all in their 20's and are having a GREAT time down here, and obviously being treated and paid well enough. Everyone of them I've seen are driving really, really nice cars (small convertibles) and must be living in nice places too!

I know it's not nice to bash the situation, but having money DOES help and I will say they are getting Obama noticed. But for the most part the local & Obama campaigns don't work as one. I just work around them. I'm doing sign waving, but am attaching local candidates signs along with Obama's! They haven't screamed yet!

2. We have those here in NE Ohio too.

The ones I hate are the ones that say: "Democrat For McCain".
I feel like spraying over the "Democrat" and paint in "Racist".

If someone really did vote for Gore and Kerry, but for some reason they like the Republican this time, there's no other excuse.

Funny story
I have an old British sports car, and I work on them as a hobby.
I was at the shop where I get my parts, and the owner (a strong democrat) asked me to stop at a customer's house to see if I could get his TR6 running as a personal favor.

DUer SampleGirl and I immediately drove over to help out (I don't charge money) and upon pulling up to his house in my Triumph we saw his "Democrats For McCain" sign.
I saw him standing in the yard, looked over at SampleGirl, back at the guy, waved.... and drove away. I'd say that bit him in the ass.

I went back to the shop and told the owner what happened, and he said he would have done the same thing. The next day the D For McC guy stopped by the shop to ask what happened, and was informed of his error in judgement, and how close he was to getting his car fixed for free.

The sign's gone now, but he can still pay someone to fix it, unless he can get Todd Palin to stop by.

My TR6

6. That's How I Feel!
I can't help it. When I see a Democrat, especially an older one, is for McCain, I can't help but think that person is racist. I know that's prejudice on my part, but there it is. I was reluctant to approach the McCain voters about the state house candidate because he is also African American. I did leave some lit at the doors and hope I didn't do more harm than good.

Yeah, I was looking for a bed and breakfast for my husband and I to get away for a weekend after the election. One place in St. Pete looked really nice, but I saw the owner used to be an event scheduler for President Bush. I just couldn't book with her because while it's possible that was just a job for her, I think she's Republican. Another place I rejected had a quote from the bible on their websites. I know it's not fair because there are Democratic people who love God too, but I just wasn't sure (I'm agnostic.

Funny how politics influences our business decisions.
