Bush Orders DOJ to Probe Ohio Voter Registrations

President George W. Bush late Friday asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to investigate whether hundreds of thousands of newly registered voters in the battleground state of Ohio would have to verify the information on their voter registration forms or be given provisional ballots, an issue the U.S. Supreme Court weighed in on last week.

The unprecedented intervention by the White House less than two weeks before the presidential election may result in at least 200,000 voters in Ohio not being able to vote on Election Day if they are forced to provide additional identification when they head to the polls.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, sent a letter to Bush Friday asking that he order the Department of Justice to probe the matter.

5. Boehner opponent is Nick von Stein - too bad we couldn't have put him over the top!!
http://votevonstein.com/

Nick von Stein was born in Hamilton, Ohio and was raised in Fairfield, where he attended public schools throughout his early education. Nick’s father worked as a fast-food manager and his mother a telephone operator for Cincinnati Bell. Their hardworking, middle class occupations and the lifestyle they would provide became the basis for Nick’s foundation as a political actor – someone who seeks to serve the working/middle class and ensure their betterment.

After high school, Nick enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving the majority of his tour at Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, where he worked as a Structural Mechanic on C-130 aircraft. Nick was honorably discharged in 2002, and moved back to Cincinnati to attend the University of Cincinnati.

In 2005, Nick graduated with his B.A. in Political Science from U.C., earning cum laude from the university and honors within the Political Science Department. In the summer/fall of 2005, Nick served as a field intern with the David Pepper for Mayor Campaign, gaining his first experience with the day-to-day process of being a candidate and running a political campaign. In 2006, Nick sought to expand his knowledge, working as a field organizer for America Votes Ohio - a coalition of some of the largest membership based progressive organizations in the State of Ohio, including the AFL-CIO, SEIU, and Sierra Club. Through this position in Southwest Ohio, Nick was able to develop intimate relationships with local labor groups, activists, grass-roots organizations, and local leaders. Nick is determined to expand on the successes of the 2006 election and bring about much needed change here in Southwest Ohio and the United States.

Nick is committed to taking on the conventional establishment that will attempt to stifle change after the election in 2008. Nick is currently working on his Masters in Political Science at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he also works as a Teacher’s Assistant.

Nick von Stein is married to his wife Summer, a Social Worker in Cincinnati, who fights injustice on a daily basis. Summer and Nick have been married for eight years. They are the proud parents of 8-year-old daughter, Payton, and 4-year-old son, Jonas.

7. disturbing sign that the national GOP dont care about the backlash
Edited on Sat Oct-25-08 07:41 AM by Essene
I've been hoping the GOP party bigs would be recognizing this election is lost... and that the GOP needs to "cut their losses" in terms of anger from the public.

I figured that the national level folks would pull back from some of these games, but here is evidence quite the opposite of this. The White House fully appreciates the political risks in taking this action...

Bad sign.

They can work as hard as they want to discredit the election, but Obama WILL win... and we just have to be that much more vigilant.

10. The DoJ can't do shit in this matter
The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled that
200,000 new voters can vote in this election.

It is galling to see bush and Boehner suddenly
so interested in "fair" elections in Ohio but when
you look deep enough this is just voter suppression
nothing more and nothing less.

We need to win big and pitch HAVA into the Dumpster.

14. The scotus ruled they didn't have standing to bring suit.
They didn't rule on the merits of the case itself. That is why * is "asking" DoJ to bring suit as scotus said they do have standing.

If they rule in their favor we will once again have as many as 200,000 provisional ballots in Ohio.

Polish up the pitchforks and gas up the vans, folks.

16. The DoJ will have to prove that bogus voter applications
are being approved and then are going to be turned into
votes in open court. Brunner is very good .... do not expect
her or others from the state to lay down and let US Attorneys,
FBI agents, or others come in here ham handed and push
people around.

If push comes to shove and the new voters have to vote on
Provesional ballots you can count on the fact that Brunner
will make it her job to make sure that those will be counted.

What I do find funny is this massive attempt @ voter suppression
is not getting 1/10 of the press as the phony ACORN story. I
think that the ACORN story was just a cover for the DoJ bully
tactics.

Do not expect the neo-con/bush/Cheney/military/media
machine to go into that "great good night" w/ out a fight.

22. Brunner is indeed a scrapper.
I was thinking a few days ago about how different these battles would have been if the pukes were still in control.

WE would be the ones filing lawsuits because the cross matching would have already been conducted and as many registrants as possible disqualified (read 100%). They would have waited until the final hours to make the announcement so as to confuddle the process as much as possible. Come election day we'd have upwards of 200,000 provisional ballots cast that would never be counted.

Yes, things could be much worse right now.

19. Mukasey has refused once, I'm guessing he will again
Boehner directly asked Mukasey to intervene and Mukasey didn't even answer his letter. We may see some handwaving, but that's about it. I don't think it's going to go anyplace.

20. Now THIS is troubling, dumbya once again misusing power
for his party's gain.

Of course they won't investigate other more important matters, but this they hop to.

The trouble with Ohio is that the southern part of the state is fundy righty and it's more southern than norhern in sentiment.

I hope that the Obama team of lawyers gets right on this imperial interferance with democracy.

p.s. note how this gets snuck in over the week end? When the media isn't watching ( as always) and KO and Rachel are off air????
