3. What is wrong with her?
I haven't heard much about it, but I believe they said she broke her hip? I didn't think that was that serious of a problem, but I guess there are associated problems that can occur anytime an elderly person had an injury like that? Is that right?

4. Cancer as well (i think) but a broken hip at her age is not good

5. Infections and pneumonia often set in
My impression is that she didn't have a fall... it just broke. So that's indicative of rapidly declining health.

13. 26%
That's the survival rate for people her age after this injury.

About this same time last year my father fell and broke his hip. The surgery to fixate and stabilize was relatively easy and successful. He died on December 2. Cause of death was listed as 'Failure to thrive'.

Sometimes it just takes too much energy to rally one more time.

Barack's tutu may make it just fine, I hope so.

20. Doctor's said pretty much same thing when my grandmother broke her hip.

He said they really didn't have a good explanation for it except that they just give up. Especially since most of the time the hip does not break from a fall, but from simply standing up.

21. Depending on overall health
a broken hip could do a frail elderly person in. My mother broke hers last year but came through fine. She's always been very hardy and she's 88.

6. It's more than just her hip, apparently.
I'm glad he went back to be with her. I hope she does make it to election day; it would provide a fitting summation to a life well lived. And you know, I think she will make it for just that reason.

14. That sucks...
Any bets on the freepers and rethugs accuse Obama of either staging this or using her illness to his political gain. I'm sick just thinking about it.

certificate.

19. Worse than that....
....some are claiming she's going to die "mysteriously" so she doesn't tell everyone the truth from her deathbed.

These are sick people

15. Do you think Barack should stay with her if the end is that close?
I just know if she had brought me up, had been like a mother to me, and the end was this near, I would not be ale to leave her side. I would not want her to die alone. I know it's a tough decision for Barack, but I think the campaign will do just fine without him there. I would rather see him with her. That's just me though, I'm a softy.

16. She's not alone--Barack's sister and Tutu's brother are both with her, too.
I'm pretty sure his grandmother wants him out on the campaign trail, fighting for good, the way she raised him.

let me amend that a little:

Nobody without an "R" after their name would hold it against him!

23. The problem is there's no real way to know when death comes
My dad hung on for a couple weeks longer than we thought he would. It's hard to say.

:-(

25. From his convention speech:
"She's the one who taught me about hard work. She's the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life. She poured everything she had into me."

Hang on, Toot. That little boy you poured everything into is about to change the world.

I hope that she is doing the best she can. I also agree that this is a tough spot for Mr. Obama to be in. But, the attention and care he has shown his family, speaks volumes for his character. Being that this is a highly personal time, you would think that even the conservatives would have a simple ounce of respect in such a grave time.

But those on the right too have proven their character. And if they are the fundies that they think they are, they are probably going to be judged by a higher power for their behavior.

Best of luck, Toot. Fight to see your grandson win on election day.
