NRCC Using Bachmann to Raise money (After Cutting Her Off)

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is rallying around Rep. Michele Bachmann and using her controversial comments about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to rally supporters.
The committee on Thursday sent a fundraising e-mail critical of the media’s treatment of the Minnesota Republican, who suggested on MSNBC’s “Hardball” last week that Sen. Obama (D-Ill.) holds “anti-American” views.

The e-mail comes as even fellow Minnesota GOPers, including Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Sen. Norm Coleman, have repudiated Bachmann’s assertion. Bachmann has since said that she misspoke.
In the letter, NRCC Executive Director Pete Kirkham notes controversial comments made by House Democrats and suggests they were given different treatment than Bachmann.

“But here we are today, less than two weeks from the election, and the mainstream media are attacking conservative Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who appeared on 'Hardball' with Chris Matthews last week, and twisting her words for suggesting that Barack Obama is too liberal to be president of the United States,” Kirkham says.

The e-mail then solicits contributions for both the NRCC and Bachmann’s reelection bid, which has become a whole lot tougher since the comments.

.... but ....

The e-mail comes as the NRCC has opted not to purchase advertising time it had reserved for Bachmann’s race.

The NRCC sent a memo Thursday making the case that it was not abandoning candidates like Bachmann when it does not purchase ad time that it has reserved.

“There are more paths to victory for Republican candidates than we have money to fund,” spokeswoman Karen Hanretty said in the e-mail. “Some candidates, like Congresswoman Bachmann, are sitting on more than $1 million cash on hand in districts that President Bush won in 2004 by double digits.”

A spokesman for the NRCC said Friday that the committee stands by Bachmann.

“We think Michelle Bachmann is a great conservative, and we want to see her come back to Washington and keep fighting for lower taxes, smaller government, family values and personal freedoms,” spokesman Brendan Buck said.

.... Sheeesh, those are the issues Brendan Buck thinks people are concerned about these days? What planet is he on? .... here's that email the NRCC sent out:

Dear Friend:

When liberal Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Republicans "unpatriotic," you didn't see it on the front page of any newspaper. And you sure didn't see it reported on MSNBC.

When Democrat Congressman Keith Ellison compared President George W. Bush to Hitler, media outrage was noticeably absent.

But here we are today, less than two weeks from the election, and the mainstream media are attacking conservative Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews last week, and twisting her words for suggesting that Barack Obama is too liberal to be President of the United States.

Here's what Congresswoman Bachmann told conservative talk radio host Mike Gallagher yesterday about how the media is distorting her words:

"And they can't take it because the point is what are Barack Obama's policies? Are they for America or will they be against traditional American ideals and values? And I'll tell you what. Punishing tax rates, redistribution of wealth, socialized medicine, inputing censorship in the form of the un-Fairness Doctrine and taking away the secret ballot from the worker has nothing to do with traditional American values. That's why your listeners need to know. Otherwise the United States may be literally changed forever."

If you agree with Congresswoman Bachmann and other conservatives running for Congress, please contribute $25, $30, $50 or whatever you can afford now and help us provide the support they need.

Or, you can make a direct contribution to Michele Bachman at her website: www.michelebachmann.com

The election is less than two weeks away, and we're up against an unfriendly media, we're being outspent by Democrats 4-to-1 and we have more Republican seats to protect than the Democrats.

Sincerely,

Pete Kirkham
Executive Director, NRCC

P.S. Don't let the media continue to distort the truth. Join the NRCC in standing behind Congresswoman Bachmann as she fights off these attacks. Chairman Cole has campaigned for her, and both he and the NRCC have contributed the maximum amount allowed by federal law. We hope you will contribute to Congresswoman Bachmann, too.

Paid for by the National Republican Congressional Committee and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee
