Help Gov. Dean Get The NRA's Endorsement!
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 11:56 AM by billbuckhead
"Help Gov. Dean Get The NRA's Endorsement!
Suggested by Mrs. Kelly Jacobs

Gov. Dean is the only Democrat running for President to have received an "A" rating from the NRA. Dean's position on sensible gun laws should merit the NRA's endorsement of him for the democratic nomination."

Google NRA and Howard Dean and this site is one of the first to come up.

Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 11:55 AM by billbuckhead
Isn't that what you want? shouldn't the rest of us a voice in whether we think this is a good idea? So on two counts this not a flame war.

in fact, that might be Dean's only chance in the general - NRA types are mad at Bush if/when he renews the AWB.

Can you imagine the panic at the RNC if the NRA endoresed Dean?

16. But I thought the logic was that.....
If a democrat and a republican have the same position on an issue (ie. the war, taxes, etc.) then why would someone vote for the democrat? So why doesn't that apply to a positive NRA rating which is a hallmark for most republicans and especially bush?

22. The last thing I would want from any dem is an endorsement from the NRA
I remember in 00 the NRA stating that if * won, they would be able to work out of the oval office. One reason I like Dean is because he is more for the people rather than organizations or corporations. The NRA are on the verge of lunacy and I wouldn't want them in any of my candidates pockets. I think the dems could find a better way than that to defeat the corrupt one.

29. Kiss of death for the nomination
That would help him get the nomination as well as Gingrich's endorsement would help him. Every other candidate and many voters would consider that a sign of selling out. In fact, his high rating with an organization I consider to be responsible for a great degree of violence in America (my opinion, no need to rehash why you disagree, since we are discussing voting, not gun issues) already makes me hesitant to support him.

And of course, the NRA wouldn't do it, either. The NRA will prefer Bush over any Democrat, so they won't give any Democrat ammunition to use against Bush in the general. Even endorsing Dean (or anyone) in the primary would soften some support for Bush in the general, and they would not do that.

And there's nothing silly about blacklist either.

Shouldn't Dean renounce the NRA or a least ask to be on the blacklist? By not turning down this dubious honor, isn't Dean kind of accepting it in the shadows.

It's not like people who support him NOW don't know what his stance on the issue is. The NRA wouldn't be that bad for the GE.

What? You mean a candidate, much less a D candidate can actually bridge the gap between gun nuts and gun control nuts? We can't have that. We can't have common ground! Hatred is so much easier!

Poor fellow.

42. I wouldn't bet on the NRA endorsing Dean
It's one thing to give him an A rating as a governor. It's entirely another matter to give up their ability to "have our own office at the White House" which is what they have with Junior.

The good news is that the NRA won't be able to run negative ads against Dean without making themselves look like complete liars. I wouldn't be surprised if they refused to endorse anyone this time. You don't get to be the most powerful lobbyist group in the country by being stupid.

46. Actually, I heard from a "gun nut" friend that a lot of NRA folks are mad
at Bush for not lifting the AWB. They feel like he's done nothing for them at all. Dean sees gun control as an issue for the states. The NRA likes that POV, so they gave him an A rating. They wouldn't endorse him, because they'll get no favors, but I wouldn't mind if they gave him an A rating again. Gun control is near the top of my list of issues, so leaving it up to the states is OK with me.
