Former Mass. Gov. William Weld (Republican) to endorse Barack Obama
SALEM, N.H. - Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, is endorsing Democrat Barack Obama for president, citing the senator’s steady leadership, good judgment and ability to unify Democrats, Republicans and independents.

"Senator Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America’s standing in the world," Weld said in a statement released Friday. "We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Senator Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire.

"Throughout this campaign I’ve watched his steady leadership through trying times and I’m confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward," Weld said.

Weld planned to hold a news conference at Obama’s campaign office in Salem at 11 a.m.

4. The Freepers have themselves to blame...they are so out in right field that they alienate all decent
people.

There is a reckoning coming for the Republican Party. They will have to cast off the far right nutbags or suffer in electoral hell for a generation. As is becoming increasingly clear, they will cast off those nuts. McCain made a crucial mistake that any 1st year polisci major would have advised him against: he ran for a general election not by playing to the middle, but by playing to the most rabid partisans of the base. He will learn, as have so many others, that the lunatic base will not win you an election.

The Christian Right is effectively finished in America, at least until the rear their heads (over our airspace) again in 20 or 30 years. They're through. The Freepers are the key symptom of everything that's causing them to lose.

5. Now this is a strange one
Granted, he's a liberal Republican who was denied an ambassadorship BY HIS OWN PARTY because he was too moderate. But he endorsed Romney for President earlier this year and played a role in Romney's campaign in Massachusetts. Not only that but he was good buddies with Rudy Guliani during the '80s' (not sure if he still is).

But I'm very happy to hear it onetheless. It restores a great deal of my faith in his character and integrity

9. Not strange at all
Bill goes with the flow -- not too many principles. He sees a bandwagon, he jumps on it. This says less about Bill than it does about the Obama campaign. When Weld jumps aboard, it means he's pretty sure Obama is going to win -- and he's looking for something for himself.

11. Bill is a tool, but a kind hearted tool.
Last of the Boston Brahmin Republicans (really see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Brahmin) to try to make a go of it in the political world.

12. Wow, another moderate Republican using the word "transformative"
It's nice to see that some Republicans can use their brain before their impulse center.
