Powell is 71, McCain 72

(Hubby and I got into a bit of a *cough* discussion about it today, he loved Powell from before and felt completely betrayed by him- now loves him again. I can't bring myself to like him very much, but I felt humbled by his endorsement of O- and what a difficult position it put him in.)

Powell may not be a darling of DU, and it's fully understandable why. But my dear loving sweet husband brought something up today..."He is ADORED by most independents and by the Republican party. Many were clamoring for him to run, they wanted him as president. He's centrist even though he doesn't admit it. More importantly he is an Icon to the R's, he is what they used to look up to and wish they had running today."

He went on to say that there will be a reason that most don't look at in the beginning as to why this is such a huge endorsement.

Powell is only one year younger than McCain, HIM stating that it's time to turn it over to the next generation- will have a giant impact. People will connect the hidden dot's as soon as the visible ones are hashed over.

Honestly I don't know how to feel about this, it's like standing in a candy store and having balloons/banners falling all around you saying "You are our 10,000th customer! You just won all the candy you can eat for the next 8 years!"

Sure it's great...you're all excited. But if you don't watch out you might get a sick stomach ache. I think I'm just going to take a small nibble of THIS candy, instead of eating the whole thing. (His Endorsement)

3. I've heard it said that Powell could have easily beaten bush in 2000...
Powell is respected by most independents.

Also, and more importantly, IMO, he is revered by the military and their families. There is the potential to make a huge difference in the military community.

This is also an outright repudiation of the Republican Party, McCain and their intolerance. Plus, Powell's endorsement of Obama is a stinging lack of confidence of a McCain administration. For McCain...this is devastating.

Powell's endorsement...good for Obama and bad for McCain.

8. McCain's temperment
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 06:30 PM by tpi10d
Wonder if it played any role in the endorsement? He mentioned Obama steadiness and McCain's activities during the wall street crisis. But I wonder if it goes deeper.....

11. Not even a full year younger. Powell will be 72 in April.
Note the difference between a healthy 70-something and Lurch McKKKlan?

12. Powell was highly respected by both parties before
his unfortunate association with the Bush administration. I hate what he did, but I don't think he initiated it- I think he was used. And to some degree he will always be a military man and that means not speaking ill of one's commander in chief. He made mistakes but at least now he is doing the right thing and he has a thousand times better judgment than many other military leaders.
