21. It is significant to an important set of voters
First, that should put many minds to rest about Obama "palling around with terrorists". I don't think most people believe that Powell would have endorsed Obama if he had even the slightest doubt about that.

Moreover, Powell is well respected among the "soft racists who might vote for a black person on a case-by-case basis" demographic. After all, Powell is the people most of them identified with as the "If we're going to have a black President, I Guess Powell would be the right kind of guy."

I think there are a lot of people who will be influenced by that. And these are the same people who are influenced by the Ayres thing, so this should help.

Remember how the Obama campaign carefully managed the "drip drip drip" of Superdelegates to grind out a victory against Hillary. This is the same kind of campaign. It is no accident that this final endorsement barrage started 2 weeks before the election and was kicked off on Meet the Press. Expect a steady flow of high profile endorsements each day now.

22. It's significant, but you have to account for the fact that a lot of people don't pay attention.
I know it should be significant, and probably will be.

29. But will he be in ads or at events?
That will reach a lot more people if Powell agrees to be featured in an ad explaining why he is endorsing Obama. As we know, the campaign can produce these spots at lightening speed and have them on the air almost immediately. I could very easily see ads featuring Powell and maybe Warren Buffet appearing in the final days. These would not be partisan punches, but would instead send the message that there is a future ahead if we trust our instincts and vote for Obama.

I doubt that Powell would allow himself to be used in a partisan message, but I'm certain he would be fine with a "message of hope and better days ahead" type of ad. They would help position himself as a senior statesman for the next few years.

32. It is possible. I bet it will happen.
He would do it if the ad portrayed Powell in a statesman role, rather than a partisan one. And that is the best way to use this endorsement anyway.

8. No, why would anyone want an endorsement from a man who
has an 80% approval rating? A man many undecideds adore..

This is bad.

9. Let's all be happy you are not Obama for many, many reasons.
You are already supporting Obama, but there are many, many Americans who are undecided or wavering who still respect Powell. Each of their individual votes counts as much as yours does.

it'll probably be good for Obama in a political sense, no matter what.

13. I voted for "very significant"
Powell is indeed respected by many independent voters. In addition, I believe his endorsement was even more significant because of the way in which it was presented. Powell took the time to explain *why* he's break from his party's line and not endorsing McCain/Palin - and he also took the time to address an issue that neither campaign has dared to bring up (for obvious reasons). Our separation of church and state as it pertains to qualification for public office is of supreme importance, and Colin is the first person I've seen with the courage to remind us all of this in a media announcement.
