Powell made me cry
when he said, regarding whether or not Obama was Muslim, the correct answer is no he is a Christian, and the even more correct answer is so what if he is?

But when he told the story of the mother mourning at her sons grave with the Muslim crescent on it, (as a mother who's son did make it home from Iraq)I totally broke down.

1. Made me cry too
when he lied in front of the UN and got 5000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed.

The man has blood on his hands and it goes right up to his armpits.

7. Yes, WE KNOW! But TODAY, Powell did the RIGHT THING.
This endorsement will only help Obama garner more votes. Let's accentuate the positives, not so much the negatives. Atleast until Nov. 4th. Ok? Thanks.

19. Would you get off it already!....
I am so tired of Democrats killing ourselves from within. We had a gift give to us today - and are you so free of mistakes and judgment errors in your own life but so ready to throw stones at another? Powell knows he made a mistake - he mentioned it today. You cannot blame Iraq solely on Powell - have you forgotten about Bush and Cheney. They buffaloed many people over Iraq. And just who IS responsible for the war - the American people. We allowed it to happen.

perhaps you think someone cannot do something right if they've done something wrong in the past.

you've got a lot to learn!

who are supposed to be on our side... Powell seemed genuinely disturbed by the whole MUSLIM thing. He is literally one of the few persons I have heard say....: No the answer REPUBLICANS is not Barack is not a muslim. The answer is Barack is a Christian--- AND so what if he wasn't? So what if he was a MUSLIM? This is America.

God---mit

30. It was the strongest denunciation of the "anti-Muslim" political attacks/tactics
and he identified the source of them.

nobody of his stature has come out as strongly and clearly against this as he.

he deserves tremendous credit for that.

4. I also liked it when Powell said that....
..."all towns have values, not just small towns have values."

The total message is that a Muslim-American in a big city is just as American as a Christian-American in a small town.

5. Some here might call you a wimp, but you are obviously a compassionate and forgiving
human being. Who here at DU if they were able would not choose to go back and correct a huge mistake they made in their lives? I am sure that Colin Powell would do the same. Unlike some, I believe in redemption and forgiveness, and not perfection. I would hope I would be offered the same opportunity.

35. Colin Powell could have shut up and never given
us any idea who he voted for -- He could have come out for McCain-but he came out for Obama.

I for one was thrilled to hear him say things in an eloquent manner that could be understood by all Americans and the world.

27. Powell choked up as he told that story
Put tears in my eyes.

He gets it. He is usually quiet about politics but this so moved him that he came out and took a stand.

These kind of endorsements matter. But in the end, endorsement or no endorsement what Powell said to stop the xenophobia towards American Muslims was absolutely necessary to defend a maligned community and therefore to defend any community maligned simply for who they are.

Good on ya Mr. Powell. That was wonderful and necessary.

29. I've said it before. HE IS NOT A BAD GUY. HE IS NOT A NEOCON.
He is a military man. He does what he is ordered to do.

Even they have their limits though and know when they have been used...Johannesburg, getting booed for parroting Neocon lies was the final straw IMHO.

The time has come to admit to it. Or fall into the dustbin of history.

I think the funny thing happening to the Republican party right now is we are seeing those who have the common sense and ability to look at the facts and say "We were wrong." The Neocons never will. The fundies and ultra-nationaistic "patriots" are too stupid (I do mean that 100%.) The fiscal conservatives and libertarians are the ones waking up. I hope they are the new strong voices of their party and not the Reagan worshiping dopes.
