Voter Registration Totals By State - Updated 10/18
Below are the latest-reported total voters registered by state, and how it compares to 2004. This data is culled from each state's website for Secretary of State and/or Division of Elections.

Alaska and Kentucky are the only two states so far who have released a final official count. A handful of states haven't updated their voter registration totals for public viewing since the primaries. These figures will all be released to the public in the next 10 days or so.

The number of registered voters for this year's presidential election is 14.5% higher than for the 2004 presidential election (so far), or 178,732,927 registered voters. Turnout among registered voters in 2004 was roughly 70%, or about 122 million votes. Turnout rates are expected to be even higher this year, and some are estimating it at 77%.

Below is a look at just the swing states from the above tables. The number of registered voters in the swing states for this year's presidential election is almost 24% higher than in 2004.

Obama is leading in the swing states as a whole by roughly 50% to 43% (see graph below) with only 16 days remaining until the election.

3. This is exactly why the polls can't be totally relied upon...
The polls are a good guide, but they can't account for the huge numbers that Obama's gotten registered over McStain's pitiful amounts.

6. True :)
When we pair this data with the pollster's crosstab percentages and adjust for increases in minority voters and young voters, the result is about 1 to 2 points higher for Obama. I'll be using this data to project the outcome on Election Eve.

One percentage point is equivalent to about 1.38 million votes in a national poll.

4. LOOK AT INDIANA! That is amazing. We're an "old" state BUT, our biggest export is college students.
People come from all over the country to attend our schools (then leave, unfortunately). And as far I as know, all of those students are eligible to vote in our election, if they so choose. Indiana is going to be a shocker!

7. Indiana has the highest increase among the swing states :)
(so far)

I wouldn't be surprised if Obama wins Indiana by a nose :D

5. Thank you for your hard work

Is it correct that these are not "hard and firm" numbers?

For example on first glance it appears that Indiana's numbers have gone down, which makes sense because the first number - over 40% seemed impossible.

The Swing state table means that the polling in these states could only go one way - Obama should out perform the polling.

Yes, the only hard and firm numbers are the official, final numbers for Alaska and Kentucky. They're still inputting registrations in all the other states. A few of the state SOS websites are updating voter registration totals daily or weekly, thus the Indiana change. There's probably some purgin' and verifyin' going on there.

14. I Expect Some of that Is Due to Emigration
It was the report that many people were leaving California for cheaper cost of living and fewer traffic jams....

Well, P-Man, you did it again! This is TWICE today I've sent you to the Greatest Page...this is getting to be a habit!

13. It looks like MN, CA, AZ all have significantly FEWER registered voters than 2004
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 02:29 PM by cryingshame
can someone please tell me I am wrong.

It looks like Minnesota has THIRTY EIGHT PERCENT fewer registered voters this year.

Did they purge over a quarter of previously voters?

19. Minnesota has 38/100 of 1% fewer
0.38% ...

California and Arizona's reductions may be due to foreclosures and emigration, I would think.

25. Add one more voter for Minnesota on election day. My 47 year old neighbor, who has NEVER voted
is registering to vote on election day and voting for Obama. She went from apolitical to highly informed voter in 2 months. We have watched all of the debates together and she is so fired up to vote for the first time in her life. :hi:

28. TX wil be higher than the chart, I think
Found out today that my county is one of two in the state with the highest number of new voters (25% increase).
The state has already admitted that they didn't get all the new voter registration in the system by 10/6 (our deadline for registration) and are STILL trying to do so this weekend. It was in an article that was basically saying "you MAY have problems during early voting because we are still processing new voter registration applications"!!!

29. Let's hope!
Most of the states right now are behind. It's unusual to have two back-to-back presidential elections with increases in voter registrations equal to three times the population growth rate.

More voter registrations in Texas can only mean good news for us :D
