This is a campaign team firing on all cylinders. The object: Lose no news cycle, EVER.
The object is certainly not always accomplished, but it is always aimed for. Last night some DUers were (rather predictably) concerned that Palin's SNL appearance would be fodder for the talking heads for the next few days, giving her additional free press and drowning out all other messages. This was a legitimate concern, I suppose, and I suspect one that the Obama camp had as well. What's interesting is the way they hold their fire until necessary.
They could have easily announced the money figures earlier, but they waited until today, anticipating a news cycle win for M/P, and seeking to divert it. I suspect they could have also rolled out the Powell endorsement far earlier if they really wanted to. Instead they held their fire, and then struck when it would produce the most advantage.
I know there's been a lot of griping about "keeping powder dry" on these boards, but that mainly comes from a frustration that our side keeps the poweder dry in perpetuity, letting even Supreme Court justices go in order to 'fight another day." This does not seem to be the way for Obama. They keep their powder dry until it is optimally destructive, and then unleash a torrent of fire on the opponents that stagger them every time.
As a fan of political maneuvering, I'm just impressed as hell by the savvy. Lose no news cycle, EVER. It has the ring of ils ne passeront pas. A battle cry.
