My take on the Powell endorsement
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 09:44 AM by steve2470
Let's stipulate that Powell screwed up royally about the Iraq War. That being said, for a former Republican Secretary of State and loyal soldier to Bushco to THOROUGHLY TRASH McCain, Bachmann, the GOP and the current McCain election strategy is extremely huge to me.

I think he's getting even/seeking atonement and he really took a big step towards that today. Wow, he let them all have it.

1. He could have endorsed and praised Obama
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 09:13 AM by PearliePoo2
and let it be.(and said McLame was a good man, blah, blah etc.)
But he took it further. He trashed the ReThugs and turned them inside out into a fucking pretzel.
He didn't have to do it, but he WENT there.
Good for him. He spoke his gut.

4. Sorry. He helped bring us the Iraq War, Gitmo and Abu Grahib.
He's a shameless opportunist at this point.

Sad. He could have been president in '92 and '96 and '00.

5. I agree, Steve!
And....he DID praise Obama! I have been sorely disappointed in Powell during his tenure with shrub, but I think this endorsement is HUGE for Obama! It will go a long way in states like Virginia and North Carolina! DU should be happy about this!

6. Some won't be happy though
It's so predictable and sad.
Some seem to want perfection from everyone and hold people's mistakes against them forever.

10. yeah, drives me nuts. He has atoned. Good for him.
he did everything he could, more than anyone in the Bush admin, to stop the war initially. Once the decision was made, he considered resigning but thought if he resigned, there would be no rational person left.

I don't argue with his decision. I wish he hadn't gone to the UN.

12. That was important.....
But what also impressed me was when he talked about the mother kneeling at her son's grave.
On his tombstone was the crescent and star. He was a young American boy who was 14 years old on 9/11. He enlisted and was killed in Iraq.
He brought this up to point out the racist, divisive direction the ReThugs have now taken their party.
I believe Colin Powell was near tears, he was so moved.
I know I was.

11. Democrats forgive, Republicans don't
If he is truly on the path to atonement, then I can start the process of forgiveness.
