9. Totally dissing Palin and McCain
Palin is not ready to lead, calls into question McCain's judgment. Hates McCain's campaign tactics re Ayers, robocalls, Muslim references, etc.

Dissing repubs using Muslim as something bad ... this is great!

37. It is extremely important. Powell can say things that others can't
especially on the bad choice palin is

I suspect those who dislike Powell are because of the UN debacle that he participated in

I believe he was duped on that deal, and when he realized he had no influence whatsoever, resigned

Whatever the case may be, this is extremely important and good for us

moderate republicans will be influenced by this

It gave Powell an opportunity to answer them. Like, Obama's lack of experience, like the race thing, etc. If he hadn't been able to answer these questions himself, then others would ask them, and give their own presumed answer.

60. CNN has just confirmed it as a BREAKING NEWS item!!
http://us.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/19/colin.powell/index.html

Colin Powell endorses Obama

CNN) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign."

He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well," Powell said.

Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself.

Powell said he questioned Sen. John McCain's judgment in picking Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate because he doesn't think she is ready to be president.

He also said he was disappointed with some of McCain's campaign tactics, such as bringing up Obama's ties to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

Powell served as secretary of state under President Bush from 2001 to 2005.

The notion of a Powell endorsement has been rumored for several months.

67. TO ALL THE POWELL HATERS... here's why you should respect him =D
1. He actually opposed the invasion of Iraq. See comments below.

2. He opposed the neocons (calls them "f**cking crazies)

3. He called for a (criminal) investigation of the lies leading to war

4. He criticized the handling of the war

5. He supported Obama's approach on diplomacy

6. He critized Mccain's handling of Russia/Georgia

7. He criticized the handling of Katrina

8. He is pro-choice & pro-affirmative action

9. He is one of the most moderate and respected Republicans out there

10. His record on the above 9 points is better than many Democrats

*** As for the first point.

A) He was nearly powerless in the Bush admin, yet he still managed to force Bush to go to the UN about Iraq

B) He got Bush's personal word that we'd accept Saddam's compliance with UN inspections without insisting on regime change (i.e. if there was even a 1% chance of a diplomatic solution, we would not invade)

C) He fought against all the lies in the UN presentation, refusing to add nuclear claims and a bunch of stuff. George Tenet, however, assured him that the intel on the remaining stuff was 100% certain. This was the head of the CIA... Clinton's guy... and Powell trusted him...

D) Powell didn't see the UN presentation as a call for invasion, but simply as more pressure

E) In retrospect, Powell says both he and Tenet were lied to... and has called for a (criminal) investigation into who buried the real intel.

69. Not Buying it. Tenent didn't convine me, he shouldn't have convinced Powell...
... if Powell is at least as smart as I am.

I don't accept that there was any evidence more compelling than the inspectors' inability to find any trace of the WMDs.

I also don't accept any argument that says we couldn't wait for the inspectors to finish their search.

If Powell accepted the judgment of Tenent who was sitting in Washington over the judgment of experts who were actually on the ground in Iraq, he is either stupid or dishonest - and I don't think he's stupid.

71. I admit, I teared up.
I really do believe that Colin Powell, my problems notwithstanding, was basically screwed over by the Bush administration-- I really do think that he believed that what he was saying was true and that in willfully deceiving him, he became an instrumental tool of the Bush administration. I can understand his mindset as my friend is an officer in the Army and he shows aspects of this where when given their orders, they try to trust that it's the right thing (although of course not trusting to the point that the SS officers took it to in the Nuremberg trials) because they tend to trust their officers and their comrades. The missing WMDs was not just a betrayal of the American public but of Colin Powell and that's my opinion. I know a lot of people still hate him and think that he was in on it but I really don't think that he was an instigator to all of this BS.

But I teared up because he made such a poignant point with his story of the American Muslim soldier who died for our country. That says it best for me. For me, Colin Powell's endorsement wasn't as important as this point that he made that more people should bring up that the very Army the Republicans revere are powered by the very people they despise. The Army has a greater portion of blacks, Hispanics, illegal immigrants (who take advantage of the automatic naturalization process) and the poor than in the general population. The Army takes them all in and the general safety of those "pro-American" bastards who sit placidly in their armchairs as they try to play their keyboard warriors are bought at the cost of these people that they revile. So sorry, I teared up a bit at Colin Powell's words.
