4. Tuscaloosa Alabama News just now endorsed Obama (added to list)

Endorsement carefully considered

Published: Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 3:30 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 9:50 p.m.
Even before the national economy began to tank, newspapers across America were in trouble. For a variety of reasons, some of them clearly our own fault, the public trusts us less. At the same time, the business model that made newspapers attractive to investors is unraveling.

So why, in the midst of all this turmoil, do newspapers like ours run the threat of upsetting even more readers by endorsing one political candidate over another?

And why, in a “red state” like Alabama, are we endorsing Barack Obama?

It is not a decision we reached lightly or easily, or without reservation. But it is a decision we reached entirely on our own.

But it does raise some questions in the minds of many readers.

For instance, who makes this decision and how does it happen?

The editorial board of The Tuscaloosa News consists of Publisher Tim Thompson, Editorial Page Editor Ben Windham, Associate Editor Tommy Stevenson and me. We are the ones who decide the newspaper’s endorsements and other editorial positions.

The board met 18 days ago to decide on our endorsement for president. We reached it by consensus; all of us agreed that Obama was the better choice. We didn’t consult with others in the community, with our sister newspapers in Alabama or with anyone else in the New York Times Co.

In fact, as in past elections, we expect other newspapers in our company will endorse a different candidate. We won’t know in advance, however, if they go with John McCain. They make their endorsements independently, too.

With local and statewide elections, we usually have the advantage of interviewing the candidates. We invite them in for 30-minute discussions on the issues. Last week, we met with two candidates for the Tuscaloosa County Commission.

Of course, we don’t have that opportunity with presidential candidates.

Which brings up another question: Why do we bother with endorsements if we don’t have any better access to the candidates than the average reader?

Like other newspapers across the country, we view endorsements as part our responsibility to the community. The purpose is not to tell readers who they should vote for but, instead, to engage in the most important discussion going on currently in public life. And we invite your informed responses, which we publish as letters to the editor.

The primary purpose of journalism is to provide citizens with the information they need to govern themselves.

Some of that information comes as news: the stories, informational graphics and photos that appear on other pages of the newspaper and on our Web site. We work to provide the most accurate, fair, comprehensive and relevant news content we can obtain.

You should be able to clearly identify what is opinion and what is unbiased fact. If we aren’t making those distinctions clear, we aren’t doing our jobs.

In addition, we provide a range of opinions on this page. You will find views from your neighbors and from global experts. We think it is important to add the newspaper’s own voice to the important discussions of the day. We do that through editorials. They aren’t signed by individuals, like the letters to the editor and columns like this one, because they are supposed to be the institutional voice of the newspaper.

5. Pasadena Star News (CA) just added to Obama's endorsements..

Obama for President

THERE is little doubt that our country faces challenges of historic proportions. The economy is headed into a recession even as we remain embroiled in two wars overseas.

As Election Day draws near, the need for steady, innovative leadership could not be more clear.

Earlier this year, we endorsed Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain for their parties' respective tickets. Now, along with the rest of our great nation, we must choose again.

We choose Obama.

It is not, however, an easy choice.

Related: How we made this decision

In many ways, both candidates have the same goals and share the same concerns: stabilizing the economy and ending the credit crisis chief among them, resolving the war in Iraq clearly another.

Their proposals and strategies for engaging these and other issues, however, are markedly different.

On the economy, Obama promises to cut taxes for 95 percent of American workers, eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses and offer tax breaks for businesses that create new jobs. While we're not enthusiastic about potential tax hikes in a rough economy, even for families making more than $250,000 a year, we recognize that Obama's plan is aimed at the whole of the middle class.

7. They've been listing newspaper endorsements in the Research Forum--
a better place to list them since those threads never get archived just for not having a post for a day or two.

16. Look at the circulation figures of the respective endorsers
Thanks for posting this Larissa. Was about to do it myself. Here is a link to the Editor and Publisher website

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003875230

According to the article:

Obama Endorsements:
94 daily newspapers total
Over 10 million circulation

That the SF Chronicle and WaPo endorsed Obama is not really a surprise (actually the SF Chron has and regularly does endorse Republicans). But of these, 16 endorsed Bush in 04, most notably, the NY Daily News, Austin American-Statesman, the Houston Chronicle, and the Salt Lake Tribune.

McCain Endorsments:
28 newspapers total
About 2.5 million daily circulation

Of these only one (that I saw) had backed Kerry in 04. Biggest are probably the NY Post (duh, Rupert Murdoch), San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Dallas Morning News.

More to come in the next few days, I'm sure
