Just got back from seeing "W" in Lower Merion, PA and I
have to tell you all something:

The film aside, which IMO was interesting but not captivating, slightly contrived but not off-putting, and unfunny because the joke was on us and the rest of the world's population, was not my focus this evening.

What I could not help but concentrate upon was the audience. By and large, Obama-buttoned liberal-types, my kind of folks, were the most obnoxious group of people I've ever had the displeasure to sit among in many many years. I will preface this by saying that perhaps people are watching too many films in their living rooms so any behavior there of course is acceptable. That being said, I must tell you that I have never suffered so much in a theater: people were eating popcorn and Tootsie Rolls with their mouths open, slurping sodas, belching and farting almost continuously. There was the almost constant sound of paper and cellophane unwrapping and worse: RE-WRAPPING(!). People were talking, laughing at inappropriate parts, getting up to stretch, sitting down and saying something to his or her partner, going to the bathroom right as the film started after sitting for half an hour beforehand, then coming back and getting up again later to go to the snack bar, bringing back MORE popcorn and eating each individual piece noisily, ONE AT A TIME. I thought I was going to go insane.

The only good news that the admission Price was only (Ha ha) seven dollars instead of the usual ten dollars. That's like three bucks in the bank: go to movies with obnoxious people and you'll be rich in no time.

Sorry for the rant, but it was amazingly revoltin'.

2. Welcome to 21st Century movie audiences...
I've had a lot of bad experiences with morons either talking or text messaging near me. I went to see The Dark Knight in IMAX on its opening Saturday. Sold out. The show had been sold out for a month (obviously, this is the biggest opening weekend ever and IMAX screens are scarce across the country). At any rate, I got a great seat. But the jerk next to me began text messaging 15 minutes into the movie and kept it up seemingly the rest of the movie. You would think that such an audience would be diehard Batman fans who want to PAY ATTENTION to the fucking movie, but no. Apparently not.

6. You described pretty much all movie audiences these days. Reason we no longer go!
Well, an even bigger reason - the pre movie ads. We refuse to sit there and be "sold at" - so it is Netflix for us in the comfort of our home!

11. What...no crying babies? You were lucky!
Last time I went to the movies there were at least 3 whining kids/babies...horrible.

12. This is why the last movie I saw in a theatre was Jurassic Park.
It has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans, or age demographics. People simply do not show any consideration of others when they are in movie theatres any longer.

You didn't mention wailing babies and kids running up the aisle toward the bathrooms yelling, "Put it on pause, Mom!" Or people talking away on cellphones or commenting continuously out loud, even yelling at the screen a la Rocky Horror Picture Show. I'd say you were lucky.

13. That's why I do not go to the movies-
$10 to sit with a bunch of assholes and endure what you did, for a movie that has at least a 50% chance of being lousy, is just not worth it. NetFlix is your friend.

14. I don't see a problem with any of those behaviors.
It's a movie theater, not a funeral.

15. How about in a live theater?
See any problem with that sort of behaviour there?

When you're paying $25-$200 a seat?

I have a huge problem with people who behave like that in ANY performance venue.

It's rude and disrespectful. If someone wants to text or crinkle candy wrappers or chat to their neighbor, go do it on their own dime, not mine.

If you paid for a ticket to a movie, didn't you go to WATCH and HEAR the movie?

17. I hate going to the movies.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 10:13 PM by madaboutharry
I always feel like I need to disinfect myself with Lysol. I hate the way the floor feels all sticky under my shoes. And a few years ago, Oprah did a show on germs and announced that there was tons of fecal material on theater seats. I really freak out and to tell you the truth the last time I was in a movie theater was when I took my kids to see Ratatouille.
