It is code word for anyone that is different from "us" meaning anyone who isn't a cool-aid drinking, gun-toting, baby-saving, knowledge hating, greedy religious nut case. What about W's "you are either with us or against us". In his mind that meant anyone who did not Sieg Heil to him and his ambitious war plans.

People who have no broad perspective of life are susceptible to this syndrome. It used to be that most Americans got a strong liberal education both in secondary schools and at university level. In this context liberal means of, relating to, or based on the liberal arts. Students left their formative years with a general appreciation for the natural sciences including math and science along with writing, civics, geography and history. So when these individuals encountered people or ideas foreign from their own they dealt with them on a more intellectual level.

Today, students lack this preparation for the future. Most Americans can hardly identify the U.S. on a globe let alone know about the Crimean war or how our government works. So when they are ill-prepared to face anything different. That can be in the form of people of different skin colors, dialect, religions, life-style (e.g. gays), religious beliefs (e.g. muslims) or political affiliation (i.e. Democrats).

I'm afraid we are heading down a dangerous road where we become increasingly intellectually insular at a time when technology and markets make us increasingly open and exposed to things "different".

It is a very scary prospect.

However, to label all the liberal members of Congress as un-American seems disingenuous to me because they are the ones who are actually trying to uphold the Constitution and therefore should be considered patriots instead.
