Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 10:41 AM by renie408
YOU might be offended by a Colin Powell endorsement. YOU might hold Powell in disdain and have no respect for him. It might suit YOUR sense of moral outrage to denounce his endorsement. But guess what? It isn't about YOU. It is about whether this endorsement would be good for BARACK OBAMA. And it would be. Even YOU can't deny that.

21. My mother just voted a straight Dem ticket yesterday. She loves Colin Powell.
She isn't a neocon and while she isn't as 'into' the news as I am, she is up on current events. Honestly, you don't have a leg to stand on and you know it. Just be wrong. I am often. Just not this time.

24. The absolute assurance with which you present your perspective
as the god given truth strikes me as reminiscent of the tone I've come to expect from the right. I just finish reading Charles Krauthammer's column about the 'race card' - I'd say your ability to reason and his are quite similar.

Consider the possiblility that you might be wrong; at least as a possibility.

2. Let's not count on it just yet, OK?
This is a diversion that we don't need. If Powell endorses Obama, that's great. If he doesn't, it's no big deal. We can't afford to lose focus on what's important and that is that McSame is continuing to go negative, and Rove is still lurking quietly in the background somewhere.

And that has me a little nervous.

It's not over until the votes are counted and McSame concedes the election to Obama.

5. I am not sure I understand what your point is.
Sorry, this answer makes no sense to me. Regardless of Powell, Rove will still be wandering around somewhere and McCain will still stay negative. There is currently a lot of discussion here on the DU about the value of Powell's endorsement, that is what I am talking about.

There are already multiple threads about this, and it's just speculation so far.

We need to stay focused. This is a diversion.

I'm less interested in my own aggrandizement than in putting the better option in the White House. I don't want Barack to cross too many lines to get to people like Powell, but if Powell wants to cross the lines to get to Obama that's OK with me.

No one is perfect - we are all human beings and we have all made mistakes in our lifetime. Yet many people are willing to throw stones. This election is to important for our country to dismiss the endorsements that come our way and Colin Powell is no exception. Colin Powell's endorsement will drive the freepers to near madness.

6. Some people are setting themselves up for a big letdown come Sunday
Powell track record shows that he follows the GOP around like a puppy. Sure, there are flashes of "independence" every now and then, but when push comes to shove, he falls in lock-step with the GOP. I don't expect this to be any different. This mystique that he's somehow a "maverick" is about as hollow as McCain's claim to be the same.

If it is, I'll gladly accept the endorsement, let him have his say, and then move on to more pressing matters.

All this "possible Obama endorsement" messages are coming from Republicans.

If Chuck Hagel isn't willing to come out and directly endorse Obama why would Powell?

My bets are we hear "while I feel both are qualified and while I have the utmost respect for Barak Obama I think we need a tested hand in this crisis and for that reaason I am endorsing my dear friend John McCain for president of the United States."

41. With Chuck retiring you'd think "what does he have to lose by endorsing Obama?".
I know his wife is voting for Obama but for most people that's a "who cares?" situation.

I would like to think that if Powell goes for McCain that Hagel will get off the fence and endorse Obama but I think Powell's endorsement of McCain would carry more weight with the general public in the end.

25. A) no matter what you think of Powell, he won't endorse McCain for money.
B) he may endorse McCain, but if he were going to campaign for him, he would be doing it already. And C) I think a lot of people here have the wrong idea about Powell. I think Powell sees himself as a man of high honor. He was devastated by his contribution to Bush's Iraqi war effort. I think that there is a strong chance that he may assuage his sense of honor by endorsing Obama. I will confess, I am not sure about his endorsing McCain. But I am sure that if he does, it will be good for Obama.

31. He donated the full amount to John McCain on August 8th. Quite a lot has happened
since then. John McCain has shown himself as erratic and has run a very poor campaign. Obama has done the exact opposite.

How can anyone say FOR SURE what Powell will do? My post said 'possible' endorsement. Are you seriously saying there is NO possibility that Powell will endorse Obama? Of course there is. He might not. But then again...he might.

Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 11:16 AM by Blasphemer
He will endorse neither. Powell is very image conscious. To endorse Obama after donating to McCain's campaign would NOT look good for him. It does not matter how poorly McCain's campaign has been run. I don't think Powell would want to be seen as a fair weather friend. He will not openly betray the GOP.

39. I think it's either going to be Obama or no endorsement.
I don't happen to be one of the people here who think Powell is a 'traitor' or devious or whatever. I think he has a strong vision of himself as an honorable man who had a high degree of loyalty to Bush the First and who felt personally betrayed by what happened in the lead up to the war. I think he found himself in an untenable position and chose to rely on his loyalty to get him through. It didn't. I don't think it is a coincidence that he dropped out of sight for the latter part of W's time in office. If he endorses anybody, it will be Obama. THAT endorsement can actually be made without compromising any honor at all. Endorsing McCain means endorsing Palin and he cannot do that without compromising himself personally. I think that McCain has acted just weird enough, has done just enough stupid, irresponsible shit that Powell could endorse Obama with a clear heart.

But I will not be surprised if he doesn't endorse anybody. I will be SHOCKED if he endorses McCain.

I'm sure Powell believes that McCain is the best of the Republican field. But McCain has not run a better race, proved himself to be a better leader and most of all, McCain hasn't stopped the blatant racism and fear-mongering against black people in this race.

My gut tells me that Powell will stand up for what's right this time.

are not that important. I don't give two shits about Powell. I don't happen to think he is the evil villain that many DUers believe he is, but that doesn't mean I 'really like' him. Honestly, I think his ONLY value is in this endorsement. I think that his endorsement of Obama can only be helpful to him.

Don't you understand? It is not about what I think or what you think...it is about what undecided and independent voters think and even about what not-so-passionate Republicans think. Or maybe you just can't think at all.
