The Rev. Wright conundrum.
Say what you will, but the McCain/Palin ticket does have some restraint.

There is somewhere they just aren't willing to go.

No crazy preacher ads. Not one.

And I don't think they will go there. If so, they would have, either bringing up the Black Bogie Man last night or in ads this past week. They stink of desperation, but they still won't touch Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Why not?

The link between Obama and his former pastor is surely stronger than the tenuous William Ayers connections.

Too racially divisive? Please. They've morphed the Republican party into the KKK-without-a-hood-crowd at their "rallies" already. The only thing they're missing is the burning crosses. That might be next.

So at this late stage, I wonder why that one last incendiary Molotov cocktail ain't getting thrown.

Any ideas?

6. But Obama routinely doesn't counter punch with "you have your own skeletons"
And even so, what do they have to lose at this point?

I'm somewhat confused by them not going there on Wright.

4. it's obvious
look at McCain's preachers and Palin's churches. They don't want to bring that up.

Also, it defuses the "Obama is a Muslim" thing they have going on.

7. they both have serious preacher problems
Someone here theorized that Colin Powell made a deal with McCain: Powell doesn't endorse Obama and McCain doesn't bring up Wright. I think that's plausible  but mainly I think it's about their preachers.

All we get are national ads and that's it.

If any 527s are running anti-Wright ads, I haven't seen them.

12. People in glass houses...?
In the past they were confident enough to pull stunts like questioning Kerry's military service when their own team never heard a shot fired in anger, because they knew the Democrat would just fold like a pack of cards. But now they sense that the opposition candidate is a fighter, they know that if they try to open that particular can of worms, Barack won't be afraid to hit back with Hagee, protection from witchcraft etc.

14. Can't risk either appearance of OPEN racism or being anti-Christian.
I'll be honest and say I voted for O. despite his association with Wright and not because of it. Frankly, the folks backing McC. are a lot more frightening than Wright.

The Ayers thing is a red herring of course. Just because that guy is guilty of something doesn't mean O. had anything to do with it. What was O. supposed to do? Abandon education reform?

17. Deserting your family to marry an heiress almost the age of your oldest child.
I believe that is the quid pro quo that the campaigns struck a deal on.

If not that, Obama's camp has a tape of McCain's Tokyo Rose POW confessions.

Anyway, this is what the voice in my tinfoil hat tells me.

18. 1) wright's actual words 2) palin's church 3) attacking churches is risky for GOP
what wright actually said was basically "god damn white america" for being racist and unjust.

there is a myth among those who WANT to have obama and blacks (thank you clinton), that wright is racist and anti-american.

the myth serves the GOP much better than the truth.

they'd rather not dig into it... cuz it can backfire in so many ways.

22. This is an interesting prediction.
If he waits that long, it's really going to look like he's flailing and desperate.

My sense is that McCain genuinely doesn't want to run a negative campaign, but is surrounded by Rove-trained advisers who keep pushing him to do so. They convinced him that the Ayers charge really wasn't about portraying Obama as a terrorist, but just someone with bad judgment. Then Sarah Palin got a hold of it and went around saying Obama pals around with terrorists. My hunch is that that was a major embarrassment to McCain, and that right now, he wishes he'd just stuck with Joe Lieberman instead.

In the end, I think you can only say that McCain decided early on that he wasn't going to make this campaign about race by bringing Rev. Wright into it, and he's sticking to that. I respect him for that.

But if you're right, and the good reverend makes an appearance in the last days of the campaign, then we'll know he was just a scoundrel through and through.

He didn't want Palin.
He didn't want any of this.

Maybe he is right.

If Obama had agreed to 10 townhalls, he wouldn't have let his handlers pick Palin and lead us down this disastrous divisive path, but since ol' meanie Obama just wanted three debates, it forced his hand into picking a red meat base stirring loony fundy like Palin.

He thought 10 townhalls he could show his experience and sway enough middle grounders to win.

But when Obama snubbed him he was desperate for a game changer and that meant Palin, lies, Ayers, and all sorts of muck he in his heart of hearts didn't want.

20. I believe Hillary's supporters were correct when they said her going there helped him.

Not the silliness about toughening him up. But because now if McCain tried that the audience reaction would be, "been there, seen that." Once the shock and initial anger passed, most people realized that they really didn't give a shit.

There are some rabid morons out there who do. But there is no need to re-play this for them.

I am still waiting for Obama launching 24x7 (or a reasonable approximation thereof) commercials featuring McCain sayting that "Americans can't" work as hard as Mexicans.

I wonder, has Obama been planning that line of attack since day one of this campaign? "McCain says Americans can't do hard work, I say, 'Yes we can!'"

30. The MSM was wall to wall Rev. Wright
during the primaries and it didn't stick. Palin has her Assembly of God ties and even most fundie churches consider A of G to be on the fringe. They could run a risk of scaring their fundie base. I think it's a third rail they don't want to touch.

31. Do you honestly believe, from the tone of your post, that the McCain/Palin ticket is not low enough
to go there? Really?

After saying that Obama "Palls around with terrorists."

Really?

I would suggest that the reason they don't go there is because they have their own religious problems.

Palin was blessed by a witch hunter preacher, laying on the hands kind of stuff. McCain is endoarsed by a preacher that says all Catholics are going to burn in hell fire.

No my friend, it is not because they will not go that low, we already know they will, it is because they each have a bag of crap that they don't want to see exposed.
