CNN Factcheck - Joe The Plumber Pays Less Under Obama's Plan - McCain Lied
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 12:23 PM by Median Democrat
CNN did a factcheck. John McCain's Joe the Plumber line is actually based on a lie. The fact is that Joe makes LESS THAN $250,000. Thus, Joe the Plumber would pay LESS under Obama's plan.

Joe's comments to Obama were based on his assumption that he would be rich some day in the future if his business were successful. In short, McCain's Plumber offensive is based on a lie. Joe would be better off under Obama right now. Yes, if Joe becomes wildly successful in the future, and opens franchises throughout the country, Joe would pay more then. However, right now, Joe will pay less under an Obama administration.

So, we can make decisions based on the assumption that sometime in the near future we will be as rich as Warren Buffet. Or, we can make decisions based on reality. Perhaps this will be another faith based election.

In an interview afterward with WTOL, Wurzelbacher acknowledged that he'd still like to eventually buy the plumbing company he works for but that he wouldn't yet be hit by higher taxes.

"I want to set the record straight: Currently I would not fall into Barack Obama's $250,000-plus," he said. "But if I'm lucky in business and taxes don't go up then maybe I can grow the business and be in that tax bracket - well, let me rephrase it. Hopefully, that tax won't be there."

Few owners are that lucky in business. In a member survey conducted late last year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) found that only 14% of respondents said they had $200,000 or more in annual income.

* * *

The bottom line: McCain's claim only works by using an overly broad definition of what counts as a "small business" - and even with that definition, fewer than 2% of business owners would be hit by Obama's proposed rate increase. For those who are affected, the increase would be levied only on a part of their earnings, not all of them.

4. McCain's Gaffe - DUers Really Need To Hit The MSM News Blogs With The Truth
The MSM could, of course, deflate this whole distraction by stating the truth clearly, that Joe would pay less taxes under an Obama administration, and that Joe's concerns are based on his hope that someday in the future he would be successful such that he would fall in the 2% of small businesses eanring over $250K that would pay more under Obama.

The MSM should be exposing this major gaffe. John McCain spent a large portion of his debate discussing a mythical figure. Joe the Plumber is not the quarter million earning Joe described by John McCain, and McCain should have done his homework.

McCain's tax plans are WORSE for Joe right now. If the MSM stated these simple truths clearly, John McCain's campaign would crumble. However, the MSM is propping up McCain, which is why they bury these basic facts deep in articles discussing Joe. This should be the headline:

"JOE THE PLUMBER WOULD PAY LESS TAXES UNDER OBAMA'S TAX PLANS."

Boom! McCain's campaign becomes toast.

9. Here is a quote of McCain's Lie
John McCain said that Obama wants “to take Joe’s money, give it to Senator Obama and let him spread the wealth around.”

Actually, that would be John McCain who is proposing to do that with his higher taxes to the real Joe the Plumber, not the mythical one created by John McCain.

5. It's a ridiculous premise. The newest talking point is that Obama will crush
small business with tax increases. :eyes:

Why doesn't Joe care about his "possible" future employees being able to get ahead? Why doesn't Joe care if people can afford to hire a plummer?

By the way, I'm planning to become the next Bill Gates one day, wish me luck!

10. Joe doesn't have a good plan for buying the business, has no license, and ...
makes far less than $250,000 a year.

So he was being quite deceptive when he talked to Obama. He claimed "I'm getting read to buy a company that makes 200.. about 250, 200 and ah 70, 80 thousand a year.". I won't claim he's outright lying, I think he's deceiving himself about his chances of buying the business. I would say they are slim. Just because he talked to the owner about it doesn't mean much.

http://wcbstv.com/campaign08/joe.plumber.wurzelbacher.2.841725.html

"Wurzelbacher, 34, said he doesn't have a good plan put together on how he would buy Newell Plumbing and Heating."

He doesn't have a plumber's license. He said he doesn't need one because the owner has one. If he were to become the owner, would he not need a license? When is he going to get a license? He's been working at the company for years. Why doesn't he get a license so he can make more money instead of whining about those poor rich people having to pay taxes? If he doesn't have the ability and/or drive to get a license, how will he run a plumbing business? He should have a Masters' license, not just a license.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27207215/

From ABC's "Good Morning America", October 16, 2008 ...

ABC's Diane Sawyer: "Well I just want to ask you now about the issue that was raised because it's been a little confusing to me as I tried to sort it out here. To get straight here, you're not taking home $250,000 now, am I right?"

Joe Wurzelbacher: "No. No. Not even close."

13. More like "Joe the plumber's helper", given that he has no license ...
http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2008/10/joe-plumber-isnt-licensed.html

A check of state and local licensing agencies in Ohio and Michigan shows no plumbing licenses under Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher’s name, or even misspellings of his name.

Mr. Wurzelbacher told reporters Thursday morning that he worked for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., a small local firm whose business addresses flow back to several residential homes, including one on Talmadge Road in Ottawa Hills.

According to Lucas County Building Inspection records, A. W. Newell Corp. does maintain a state plumbing license, and one with the City of Toledo, but would not be allowed to work in Lucas County outside of Toledo without a county license.

Mr. Wurzelbacher said he works under Al Newell’s license, but according to Ohio building regulations, he must maintain his own license to do plumbing work.

He is also not registered to operate as a plumber in Ohio, which means he's not a plumber.

http://wcbstv.com/campaign08/joe.plumber.wurzelbacher.2.841725.html

He said the business consists of owner Al Newell and him. Wurzelbacher said he's worked there for six years and that the two have talked about his taking it over at some point.

Here's some information on A W Newell Corporation. It doesn't agree with what Joe reportedly said about number of employees. This says 8, he said the owner and him. This says sales of $510,000, but that is sales, not profit.

14. The MSM Fails To State This Simple Fact - Joes Saves More With Obama
Look at CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Fox News and CBS. Yes, if you link to the stories, and scroll to the bottom of the stories, you can find, if you search hard enough, that Joe makes far less than $250,000 and that he would save more under Obama.

HOWEVER, none of these news organizations are showing any headlines stating this simple deveastating fact. The MSM is purposesly trying to keep this lie alive, which misleads the American people that Joe is a small business owner who is hurt by Obama's tax plans. He is not. He would greatly benefit from Obama's tax plans, and that voting for McCain would be against Joe's economic interests. The only way it makes any sense is if Joe thinks he is going to have dramatic success, and make more than $250K, but even he says that he needs a lot of luck to get to this point.

So,why doesn't CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Fox News and CBS have a headline that states this simple fact? Its the same reason why CNN continues to push stories about race, and why Fox news continues to push stories about Ayers, the MSM favors the GOP, and it is going to require even more money and volunteers to overcome this institutional bias.

16. Update - MSM Still Has Not Clearly Disclosed That Joes Saves More Under Obama
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 05:31 PM by Median Democrat
Sure, there are bunch of other holes in the mythology of Joe. However, the basic fact is that McCain lied. Joe saves more under Obama's tax plan, rather than McCain's tax plan. Thus, McCain's homage to Joe was a complete fraud, and a waste of time.

The MSM is simply refusing to state the truth clearly in an effort to prop up John McCain.

20. I am a small business owner making less than 250k per year.
I will do better under the Obama plan and so will Joe, there is not doubt. Something Joe didn't mention, healthcare is a huge issues for small business and the self-employed. Right now we pay near 1/4 of our income to get health insurance for our family. Obama's health plan is so much better, that would make a huge difference for our family and our employee's families, too.

If I ever make more than 250k I will be more than happy to pay higher taxes. Truly. But I am not holding my breath.
