179. who among us hasn't done something like that? not me, that's for sure
Ellen DeGeneres or Paula Poundstone--I think it was Ellen--had a routine about how when you're walking down the street and trip, and people see you, you do a little hop as if to say "I meant to do that," or you start running to cover it up. This is similar--making a goofy face to laugh at yourself so others won't beat you to it.

I think this humanizes him. It's hilarious, but it also makes him seem like a real person. It reminds me of the old John McCain, who could laugh at himself.

Never in front of 70-plus million television viewers when you're trying to make them believe that you'd be a good leader during a time of several very serious crises, and that you're the steadier, more serious candidate.

Nope, never done that.

It's retirement time, John. I'm not even sure Arizona wants him back now.

US Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain (R-AZ) reacts to almost heading the wrong way off the stage after shaking hands with Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) at the conclusion of the final presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, October 15, 2008. 292. The caption misstates the actual context
McCain wasn't having trouble finding his way off the stage.

This undignified moment came just after Obama had reached across the desk to shake hands with Bob Schieffer after the debate, when McCain and Schieffer started heading in the same counter-clockwise direction around the debate desk to do likewise. Seeing they were heading in the same direction, McCain lunged right-and-left, goofily, and stuck out his tongue, before heading back around the desk, to his left, clockwise, to meet and shake hands with Schieffer.

The point, to me, is how un-Presidential McCain is. I don't want another 4 years of a goofball Presidency.

334. Interesting.
If the caption is factually inaccurate then I'd think it's short of perfect, especially since McCain wasn't exiting the stage at that point. Once finally shaking hands with Schieffer, McCain remained on the stage with his wife for some time, waving to the crowd, so it is factually inaccurate.

As for brevity...
REUTERS/Jim Bourg

And I'd hardly call this caption brief, nor would it have been lengthened much by reporting the incident accurately.

YMMV, but I'd prefer to not follow in the path of the Right Wing and would like to stick with the reality-based community.

293. No, it happened when McCain was trying to circle the debate desk ...
... to shake hands with Bob Schieffer. Obama and Schieffer shook hands across the desk, but McCain and Schieffer both began circling the desk counter-clockwise to meet and shake hands. At which point McCain did his undignified back-and-forth jig with his tongue stuck out before heading clockwise to meet with Schieffer and shake hands.

But neither man was leaving the stage at that point. McCain was reacting to the confusion between him and Bob Schieffer in accomplishing their post-debate handshake. After which, both Obama and McCain remained on the stage for some time, with their spouses, waving to the crowd.

I wondered what that weird dance was about. What's with the tongue flapping?

I thought his earlier tongue darting around was due to whatever his prescription cocktail for the evening might have been.

But his kind of -- Yee Haw I'm Done, stick out tongue and do some steps -- stood out as quite the goofy moment.

84. Its real... very real... I saw it live...
When I saw it live I didn't think much about it... but the picture, wow, that is priceless. I've got some strange mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I feel bad for the old codger, but I just can't stop laughing every time I see it.

Folks, this is history right here. This has been, without a doubt, the most bizarre election I have seen in my lifetime. And this final debate has been the topper. I'm thinking of watching the whole thing over again just so I can verify McCain's strange facial expressions - just to see if what I thought I was seeing was in fact really there. I am certain I saw McCain roll his eyes when Obama suggested that we should stipulate that workers be treated fairly and allowed to organize as part of any trade agreement we make with another country. There were also moments were McCain appeared to be seething with rage. At other points he was just plain condescending. And then at the end where he was saying "Great job" it just seemed so strange - the icing on the cake was when McCain couldn't figure out which way to go around the table and he makes that goofy face. Truth be told that pretty much sums up his whole campaign. John McCain, he doesn't know which way to go.

I have a very guarded optimism because of the way the elections ended in 2000 and 2004, but I am going to say that this is pretty much over except for the counting.

key words in this sentence...."this is pretty much over except for the counting"....unfortunately, that seems to be right where the biggest problem is...wb

111. Totally for real. Just watched the repeat on CNN.
It comes at the very end of the debate, right after they shake hands and McCain says, "good job! good job!" and goes to leave the stage. He was (I can only guess here) trying to be funny. But it totally truly honestly happened, I can assure you.

294.  No, it wasn't when they were "leaving the stage."
I'm amazed at the number of people unable to accurately report the circumstances of McCain's foolishness. The tongue-extension and back-and-forth jig came when McCain was looking to circle the debate desk to shake hands with Bob Schieffer, but saw they were both headed, fruitlessly, counter-clockwise around the desk. After the undignified dance, McCain headed the other direction and shook hands with Schieffer, before exiting the stage.

336. Certainly reasonable. But there are far too many people in this thread ...
... who are/were trying to gin-up another "McCain lost on stage" moment, and I'd rather not have that as a post-debate talking point. I wouldn't want the story of the goofiness and undignified behavior to be undercut by protests of ageism.

Peace be with you. And good luck down there with the GOTV. Hope you're seeing more support.

167. Real. I saw it while watching the debates. At the end he does it when he
starts to leave to the wrong side. When the debate vids are up on YouTube you'll see it. It looks much worse in a still shot, but it looked pretty bad in the actual live action shot.

Then later, when the candidates and spouses are at the front of the stage together facing the audience, he does another tongue-out face. Very bizarre. And before that second sticking-tongue-out face at the end, he does several weird thumbs up gestrues--frantic, freaky, not ordinary thunmbs up gestures.

I think he was on meds.

131. He seems to look older and angrier than ever each time he appears.
He really seemed to be trying to be civil this time, but I believe he still couldn't bring himself to say "Senator Obama," though I didn't catch the whole programme.

At the stage I came in to watch it, McCain seemed to be studiously facing front at the camera. Then it showed him and Obama looking across at each other, and I wondered if they'd indicated to him that he should face Obama and look at him, or whether the brief, earlier angle had been a legitimate one, just different.

Anyway, that presidential campaign trail is no place for an old geezer, especially when he starts off angry. It seems strange going on about his anger, because it's been a particularly stupid jibe against Democrats - but then if they're weren't angry, feeling and expressing the anger of the people, they would be morally impaired. Some things demand a sense of human outrage, but what's McCain got to be angry about? He wants to win the thing, crazy as it sounds, so his stress is self-inflicted. Where is is his moral compass? Why is he a Neocon, like any other? Looting the country and its people without evincing any sense of shame. Where is he shame about his role in the deregulation, for example, in which he played a very vociferous role?

He doesn't know why either.
Actually, I expect they had the two candidates enter from opposite sides, and as Letterman advised him last week, you should leave the way you came in. McCain is so used to being led by Obama now that he just naturally started to follow him off the stage.

that this is really sad. There's no way, no conceivable circumstance at all, that McCain- Palin

BUT, good grief, there are some serious health factors here.

Obama was terrific tonight and I'll bet he knows on some level that he's dealing with a fragile

83. This points to a profound decency on Obama's part.
When McCain started up with Joe the Plumber I was waiting for something like The Undertaker's "last ride";) I mean the plumbers union endorsed him! He didn't do it and I was wondering why? The smack down in the second debate on "doesn't understand" was right up there with the great ones - elegant and effortless but utterly devastating. So why didn't he go for it with a plumber union reply - 'Joe the plumber ought to talk to his' fellow members of the plumbers union. They just endorsed me." McCain: "Joe's not in the union." Big win Obama. I learned something about him tonight very positive.

Keyes was training for Palin;)

The part of me that's not a very nice person really wanted to see McCain't goaded into a full-on frothing cussing meltdown on live TV. He was so close to the edge and Obama wouldn't even have had to look bad to provoke it. It would have been so easy. And he didn't. He was courteous and beat the nasty old coot in a fair and classy way.

160. Kerry windsurfing? Give me a break you know better than this
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 09:28 AM by karynnj
Kerry windsurfed for a few hours during the Republican convention when campaigning is not done. It was a small media photo op. The fact is that it showed a happy, athletic candidate on a beautiful Nantucket day. In any other campaign, this would have been a way to get a small amount of positive, feel good coverage during the Republican convention. The media, some Kerry staff and Teresa were in the boat, all obviously enjoying the outing. This did not show a personality flaw or anything wrong with the candidate. It was good clean fun. In fact, it might have eliminated the Republican opportunity to try a whisper campaign or a push poll like a Democratic opponent tried in Iowa, asking if you would still vote for him knowing he was dying of cancer.

This is a country that loves sports and fitness. The Republicans were extolling Bush's mountain biking - even as he had a tendency to fall off. The Republicans and their media allies worked to make Bush seem like the athlete, he wasn't - enough so Sports Illustrated readers voted him more athletic than Kerry. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/12225.content.html
This so mystified one editor of the magazine that he nominated Kerry as athlete of the year - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/magazine/specials/sportsman/2004/11/18/john.kerry/

The fact is that the Republicans used a photo of Kerry windsurfing that they moved around on a background for the ad. There were photos of Kerry windsurfing going back at least to 1998. Wind surfing is not an elitist sport - golf which many Presidents play is more expensive. It does require coordination and fitness. Now, before you say that the clothes worn look strange - remember that Clinton won after being photographed jogging in too tight shorts - leading to jokes that he jogged to McDonalds.

I defended Biden, who you supported, in the primary fights when he was stereotyped by comments that were clearly his least thoughtful and not typical. Here, you are taking cheap shots at two good Democrats who deserve better. In case you missed it, there has been no better surrogate than Kerry in support of Obama/Biden. It is too bad that Kerry didn't have a surrogate as good as he himself has been this year.

171. The importance of the Dukakis and Kerry photos have nothing to do with their context
or facts but the perception that they took on in the popular culture. The impact the pictures had in the campaign is well established and referring to that fact is not a polemical against either of them.

The same is true here. While the video of McCain is a little odd it doesn't do nearly the damage of the still photos who most people on the thread think has to be faked.

It is not about the polemical of the pictures but how pictures have an impact in the popular culture.

Not that it matters but I was never a Biden supporter in the primaries.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 10:30 AM by ProSense
Are you suggesting that you're spinning the image of McCain as ridicilous?

You know, there are a lot of legit criticisms of Hillary posted and you are one of the first to try to criticize any such post.

If this title had included Hillary's name, the thread would have been hijacked by personal attacks, claims of "not cool" and eventually be locked.

Evidently, gratuitous RW spin involving Kerry is more acceptable than legitimate criticism.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 03:32 PM by karynnj
The Kerry picture actually had very little to do with the results. There are at least 10 things that people have sited as why Kerry lost. The fact is that Bush's approval was still around 50%. The Presidents who lost, were far lower. The closest, Ford, was around 45% - and Carter barely won.

In Kerry's case, had there been sufficient voting machines in Ohio, he would have won - and it would have been a major upset.

I've seen enough comments you made on this thread to see that you think you are right and will not reconsider. I've seen windsurfing on vacation - and I did not think it looked "silly", it was graceful and fun to watch - and neither my husband or I gave a second's consideration on whether we were fit enough to even try. If Bush had been able to do stay upright long enough to get a photo the Republicans would have proudly used the picture.

The NYT a month before the election had an op-ed speaking of how if he were Republican, his genuine war record, his saving the life of a Republican Senator, his athletic ability, his ability to not only fly, but to do stunts, and his Presidential demeanor and looks, the Republicans would have pushed him as a dream candidate. The Republicans attack strengths - so for Kerry they pretty much attacked every thing about him and his wife.

I can also be non-partisan - Clinton did not look good in 1992 wearing shorts when jogging. I did not think of those pictures for a second when I voted for him over Bush 1, I thought of all kids of political differences.

185. LOL!! McCain is totally a lizard!
He totally reminds me of an Iguana. It reminds me of the Colbert Report after the last debate. They were showing footage of it and many shots of McCain sticking out his tongue in a very lizard like manner. Afterwards Colbert said something like McCain has won the reptile vote (obviously it was a lot funnier than that). Maybe David Icke is right.

"I must eat that fly"

Here's the link to the Colbert Report

172. the reference to the Dukakis or Kerry photos had nothing to do with their context
or facts but the perception that they took on in the popular culture.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 10:51 AM by beachmom
It was the RNC that provided context, as a flip flopper. Or finger in the wind. Or something. I never got that.

I mean in ANY context that photo of McCain is really embarrassing. But you can't say the same of Kerry windsurfing. The RNC had to work at it, and get media support. The above photo in no shape or form can be spinned away. And it is entirely viral, and will NEVER be used by the Obama campaign. That is the difference.

187. The 'impact' on the campaign? Thanks, I believed the US attorney scandal was about ELECTION FRAUD
that was being set up well before 2002 and continued throughout 2006. You convinced me that election fraud didn't happen, but it was all about a windsurfing photo - a photo that was no different than the COVER of Windsurfing Magazine that extolled Kerry's skill and balance.....of course, that was an ACTUAL account of Kerry's windsurfing, and NOT the RW BULLSHIT spouted by corpmedia.

But, you really should post in Election Reform forum and let all those folks know they are wasting their time because all a Dem nominee has to do is NOT windsurf because a photo of windsurfing is an election killer, not massive election fraud.

191. Again, it wasn't "the perception that they took on in the popular culture." It was RW spin.
None of the 59 million people who voted for Kerry gave the RW BS spin on the photo a second thought, much less your suggesting that it had an impact on the election.

By your comment, you are suggesting that you're spinning the image of McCain as ridicilous. The photos of McCain, his reaction in the debate, will have real (not spun) impact. People are not taking him seriously, and believe he has the wrong temperament for the job.

As I said previously, there are a lot of legit criticisms of Hillary posted and you are one of the first to try to criticize any such post.

If this title had included Hillary's name, the thread would have been hijacked by personal attacks, claims of "not cool" and eventually be locked.

Evidently, gratuitous RW spin involving Kerry is more acceptable than legitimate criticism.

you know, the bent over guy who walked around with a perpetual black cloud hanging over his head? . . .

oh, yeah . . . Joe Btfsplk . . . according to Wiki . . .

"The world's worst jinx, Joe Btfsplk had a perpetually dark rain cloud over his head; instantaneous bad luck befell anyone unfortunate enough to be in his vicinity. Though well-meaning and friendly, his reputation inevitably precedes him, so Joe is a very lonely little man. He has an apparently unpronounceable name, but creator Al Capp "pronounced" Btfsplk by simply blowing a "raspberry", or Bronx cheer. Joe's personal black cloud became one of the most iconic images in the strip." . . .

then again, maybe not . . . "Though well-meaning and friendly"??? . . . that certainly doesn't describe McLame . . . still, there IS a resemblance . . .

260. Don't think it was a James Stockdale moment exactly
Remember Vice Admiral James Stockdale? He was H. Ross Perot's running mate in the 1992 presidential election. He famously wandered around the stage during the 3-way vice presidential debate. McCain didn't seem that aimless or confused.

What seemed to happen was McCain instinctively began following Obama. For the Freudians: McCain unconsciously accepted Obama as the alpha male and automatically followed his lead. Then he caught himself, realized what he was doing and how it would look to cast Obama as the lead dog, and tried to make a graceful recovery. He failed on the graceful part, and went for goofy. Goofy doesn't seem very presidential. I don't personally have a problem with a President who occasionally goes for the funny. Kennedy and Lincoln were quick with the jokes, and they did pretty well. But a President does have to be very image-conscious in public.

I honestly think the more profound moment was right before the goofy tongue thing, when McCain, without thinking, put himself in the role of follower.

268. I feel sorry for the old guy...
goofing around like a teenage boy.

He might be ok as a grandpa but I don't want him as president.

Obama is right, it's suffocating to go through a political campaign without having a vigorous debate that focuses on the issues.

I'm saving my sympathy for after Nov. 4th...

272. OMG! It really IS the Leslie Nielson school of campaigning!
Kevsand has been saying for a while now that what we are watching is McCain subscribing to the Leslie Nielson school of political campaigns: "When you are down in the polls do something silly." I have laughed at his observation a few times, but this REALLY does hammer it home!

312. Kerry? Why are you dragging Kerry into this McCain mocking post.
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 08:16 PM by wisteria

I am going to be straight with you. I resent this post because it is ignorant and it demeans other Democrats. It ignores the complexities of the 2004 campaign and boils painful Democratic losses down to ridiculous Republican attack ads.
Everyone loves a winner, but Senator Obama wouldn't be where he is without the help of other Democrats like Senator Kerry. Senator Obama has been lucky, well funded and has people who have his back. Yes, he has run a good campaign and has benefited from lessons learned. He has been given a boost from the unfortunate down-turn of the economy and the long primary - which thanks to Senator Clinton- helped him become a better candidate and kept the Republicans at bay and not able to attack him for a long time.
You could have made your point with just McCain. I have to wonder what your purpose was in dragging other good Democrats in on this attack mocking of McCain.

332. Maori war face + old geezer cough
All this time John McCain has been hiding his Maori ancestry? Geez John, the Maori are fierce warriors, you should have let us know about this long ago. That's a lot of trouble to go through to deny his heritage, he must have spent thousands of dollars to have his tattoos removed...along with his balls.

337. These are some of the funniest photos of any politician I have ever seen
They never seem to get old, no matter how many times I look at them and laugh. I think they will be the thing I remember most about this political season in the years to come. When I think about the war in Iraq, it's that poor guy standing with a hood on his head and electrodes at Abu Ghraib that I most remember. When I think of McCain and his campaign, it will be the tongue and the hunched-over zombie pose that I will remember.
