McCain had to try to press on Ayers on ACORN or he couldn't face his own crowds
He basically used the old Republican template (he's a tax and spend liberal, he's "pro-abortion", I am for vouchers) but the crowds have been so angry (McC lead with that 4 times) that if he hadn't brought it up and pushed it he would not have been able to face his own crowds the last 3 weeks. He could have had an outright rebellion on his hands and on live TV.

Obama clearly won ON abortion which the Republicans are just certain that they owned.
The early polls on CNN have Obama winning across the board 58-31 and on every single specific element.

By the way I would be remiss if I didn't mention that, ironically, McCain looked like he had on too much lipstick. Perhaps a Nixon-JFK moment there. Plus he looked like a kid in a suit for the first time.

McCain is spending all his energy trying to not really rally the base but to keep the beast subdued.

2. And once you feed an animal read meat....
The Republican hierarchy has become its own worst enemy. They stirred this up and now they can't control it.
