Like him, I'm a VietNam vet. Like him, I bear scars from combat. I still honor his service. (Don't let anybody tell you it doesn't take guts to hold that pip on target while anti-aircraft arty and SAMs are trying to climb into the cockpit with you, and every fiber of your being is screaming PULL THE FUCK UP AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!) But that's where it stops. He has run the most dishonorable campaign in my memory. McCain has gleefully lied about Barack Obama's past positions and about his present proposals. He has demonstrated that there is no position he will not abandon for political expediency, and has willingly pandered to the worst instincts of his base with implications that Obama is somehow un-American ... the "Other". Then, when the predictable shouts of "terrorist" and "kill him" erupt from the crowds, McCain thinks that we're stupid enough to accept his half-hearted "tut-tut" as evidence of a noble nature. Sorry, Johnny, it won't wash. While never having heard the siren call of the presidency, I am still morally certain that had I ever aspired to that august office, I would have done so in a way that would allow me to sleep at night. You can not possibly make that same claim.
