What did McCain say about union votes?
Did he just say that Obama would do away with secret ballots for union votes? What the hell is he talking about? Where did he get that little gem of misinformation?

1. That's the Republican spin on the Employee Free Choice Act.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 01:29 PM by ogneopasno
They pretend a card check takes away the secret ballot.

ETA: Seeing all the Republicans suddenly so concerned about union members and potential union members...well, it would make me laugh if it didn't make me want to barf.

3. They're slamming Mark Udall the same way here in CO
We also have a Right To Work (for less) resolution on the ballot. The union bashers (The Chamber of Commerce, Club For Growth, etc) are spending millions on ads. I worked a show for the Metro Denver CofC and the president was almost apoplectic over the devastation that would ensue if workers actually got more rights.

What really amazes me is that some of the guys I work with agree with the Repugs on this. These are people who's healthcare is getting almost unaffordable (or canceled) and who know that their jobs are tenuous. Amazing that they'll believe anything they're told.

5. Good God, would you put a warning on that commercial?
It's not good for me to want to beat the crap out of a TV actor for playing a stupid character in a union-busting ad. ARGH!

12. It's a g.d. lie.
Union members are allowed to opt out of having their dues go toward political work. For whatever reason, my brain is cramping up and I can't remember what that provision is called; help me out here. Of course, any profit you generate for a corporation can go to fund all sorts of things you might not like.

God, I hate that guy, and he's a fictional character. What the hell job is he going to, anyway?

13. I've already voted NO on all 3 amendments
Jeez it took a couple of hours to study up on all of the amendments and resolutions. The wording was very confusing especially about 49. There is going to be a lot of low information voting come election day. I just hope the LIVs vote no on the amendments they don't understand!

9. Here is the definitive Neocon rationale about the EFCA
http://www.heritage.org/research/Labor/bg2027.cfm

It takes a strong stomach to read. I find it kind of ironic how the article makes it sound like they're SOOOOO worried about workers "rights". :eyes:

8. He's half-truthing about the Employee Free Choice Act
EFCA would allow a union to be certified if a majority of eligible workers check cards in favor of being organized. The cards are now, and will remain, secret. What EFCA is short circuit the intimidation that often follows after a successful card check campaign but before the final, NLRB certified vote.

11. Nearly Half of Union Elections Report Employer Lawlessness
WASHINGTON, DC—As part of an ongoing campaign to educate the public and broaden support for one of the most critical pieces of legislation facing America’s middle class—the Employee Free Choice Act—American Rights at Work is releasing a series of new research. This research series will expose the many flaws in our current labor law system that give corporations too much power, creating a disadvantage for workers, and will highlight solutions provided by the Employee Free Choice Act. It’s time that the public and our leaders receive an honest portrayal of the state of the American workplace and of this legislation.

As part of the initial launch of this series, American Rights at Work has issued the following two new research findings that affirm the critical need for labor law reform:

Out of Control: Employer Misconduct During Union Organizing Far Too Common

While anti-union interests claim the National Labor Relations Board election system protects the right to vote, the grim reality remains that our broken system denies the right for workers who petition for an election to vote in four out of 10 cases. Further, in 46 percent of NLRB-supervised union elections, workers report employer lawlessness both before and during the election. This new research exposes the hypocrisy of too many employers who manipulate the system to deny their workers a vote while holding it up as a fair process.

Half a Million and Counting

One of the major components of the Employee Free Choice Act levels the playing field for workers by giving them a free choice and a fair chance to form a union. The bill requires employers to honor workers’ choice to form unions though the majority sign-up process, which is optional under current law. In fact, since 2003, more than half a million Americans formed unions through majority sign-up, giving workers the ability to improve their standard of living. Although often critiqued by anti-union interests, these findings show that it is a fair and well-established method of organizing.

Over the weeks and months to come, American Rights at Work will continue to release new, original findings as part of the overall campaign until the bill is passed.

Note: Opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act, as well as support of Right to Work legislation, is part of the Republican Party Platform.
