...McCain is gonna head into the debate PUMPED! No more Mr. NICE GUY! Take NO Prisoners! It's GAME DAY! YEEEAAAARGH!

And he's gonna head out of the debate thinking: "Uh oh. What the hell did I just scream at the entire world?"

Obama's playing McCain's temper like a Stradivarius.

1. McCain's problem is that all of his snappy zingers and one-liners
sound a little too pre-meditated: his comic timing isn't great, so they tend to fall flat. In a debate with an ordinary opponent they might work fine--almost anybody looks like a Groucho-esque wag next to Mitt Romney. But Obama's actually capable of improvising effectively, and turning McCain's school-yard taunts back on him (I think they prepare meticulously, too--and McCain's been a genius at telegraphing his punches so far). All the reporting so far indicates that McCain's planning to unveil an economic package that will out-populist Obama's at the same time he's going to accuse Obama of being cocky: measuring the Oval Office drapes before the election, etc. Nice of them to let us know. No doubt Obama's people are figuring out how to upstage the New Improved McCain as we write this.

9. Exactly. Seems like the RNC is preparing a Comeback Scenario and I'm sure
the Obama team is preparing brilliant responses to those moves.

And you're certainly right about McLame trying humor. It really does just fall flat.

Even some of his attempts at being colloquial are clunkers. At the Biker Festival, when his entering Cindy in the Buffalo Chip contest was the news item, I was more stirred up by his scrambling of a line that was supposed to be just folks talk. He was wanting to say-- "I'll bet you're mad at paying 4 bucks a gallon." And it came out like "Bucks. 4. Four dollars. Four bucks. A gallon. Bet you're tired of paying that." Listeners were rather confused by his disjointed comment.

4. If Hillary didn't know what a Red Bull was, I'm sure McCain doesn't.
Viagra, on the other hand, I'm sure he is quite familiar with.

8. Well of course he is also pumping up expectations and if he just goes in and
whimps out again at the debate everyone is going to turn on him again.

BTW didn't you get the impression that he wanted to shout 'whippersnapper'
