Latest trolling for concern: "Well, okay, we're winning -- but Obama will only have one term!"
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 10:16 PM by villager
Not sure how posters can assert this so absolutely, as if anything about this unpredictable century will be predictable...

Might as well say, "I hate to tell you this, but even if Obama wins, everyone reading this post will someday be dead."

5. Won't Matter Anyway
The rapture is coming on Dec 21st, 2012, so this is the last election of any consequence. Isn't that how it goes? I know Sarah Barracuda says something like that.

:P

10. The election only guarantees anyone one term-
he may be ready to punt at the end of the term given how bad of a situation he inherited.

13. That's the least of our worries
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 10:23 PM by Awsi Dooger
In 2012, Obama would be in the incredibly favorable scenario, an incumbent with his party in power only one term. That's the landslide situation, 9 wins in the last 10 tries (Carter 1980). And since Obama follows Bush, he'll be hard pressed not to be considered a major improvement.

Now if we want to get concerned, 2010 doesn't look great. We're defending tons of senate seats, hold many gov seats in unlikely states like Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas and Wyoming, and normally the party in power loses House seats. If Obama wins, we need to get to work on 2010 ASAP. It's been favorable situational terrain in 2006 and 2008 but 2010 will be the opposite.

19. Actually, the Senate terrain in 2010 doesn't look too bad
Harry Reid may have a battle on his hands if Rep. John Porter gets reelected this year. And Barbara Boxer may face the fight of her life if Arnold decides to run. Byron Dorgan in ND may face a difficult race if Gov. John Hoeven runs. Other than that, if Daniel Inouye retires, Hawaii's Republican governor, Linda Lingle, would have a decent chance at winning that seat. Ken Salazar may face a decent challenge, but I wouldn't bet on it. And Feingold would probably face a decent challenge.

Of those, I would guess that the Republicans would have a decent shot at winning Reid's and Dorgan's seats. Dorgan may be in decent shape however, given how popular he is. Reid may face problems, but hopefully Porter loses to Dina Titus (D) this year.

Beyond that, Democrats face very good pickup opportunities in Arizona (McCain's seat, which Napolitano could very well run for), Florida (Martinez' seat), and Missouri (Robin Carnahan could defeat Kit Bond). If Chuck Grassley (R) in Iowa retires, we could very well pick that seat up. In Kentucky, Ben Chandler stands a great chance at knocking off senile Jim Bunning (R). Richard Burr in North Carolina could face a good challenge, and if Kathleen Sebelius runs in Kansas, we could pick up Sam Brownback's seat as well.
