Poll question: What makes you a Democrat?
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 09:37 PM by willing dwarf
In light of the way Democrats such as Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers have been implicated in the breakdown of regulation leading to the big international swindle, I'm thinking about values vs. party loyalty.

What makes you a Democrat? What do you value about your identity as a democrat which makes it hard to imagine ever imagine voting republican?

I've identified a few options I can think of, but I'm curious to know what holds other people around here to the party. (Sorry I can't think of any humorous choices at the moment, but you guys are all creative enough to come up with some!)

14. yeah, there definitely needs to be all of the above...
And maybe add that Democrats don't try to suppress our basic voting rights.

19. Ok, I've added all of the above, so all results are now skewed...
I meant to put that choice in, but hit post when I meant to hit preview. So gauche!

In other words, tolerance for different perspectives.

And all that other stuff too.

9. That's it for me too
I wish we could make that a central part of the party because it's a key element.

5. Democrats are concerned about things other than themselves.
They see themselves as part of a larger whole. Repukes only think or care about themselves and what they can get.

6. All of the above, plus I am a Christian. My faith and my politics are
inextricably linked, and I do not see Christian values being represented by the Republican party.
I hear a lot of sound bites and talk and surface, superficial, shallow BS, but nothing of substance that truly speaks to FAITH.

16. I grew up in a family that was blue as blue can be...
My dad was a blue collar guy who worked on the line for GM. His dad - my grandpa - was an original Sit Downer. The UAW and its values of hard work, fair play and the power of collective bargaining, as well as the legacy of unions and the Democrats - historically a friend of labor - which have helped workers of ALL stripes, first brought me to the Democratic party. It's the values of social justice, acceptance of other people's choices in life, giving the less fortunate a shot at the American dream... that made me stay here.

I'm not making much sense, I'm sure, but I'm so proud to be a Democrat.

20. I cannot find a convenient little box to describe exactly what makes me a Democrat.
I cannot hold with the Republican YOYO principles: You're On Your Own, and God helps those who help themselves. I believe that we are our brothers' keeper and our sisters' too. To whom much is given, much is required and God helps those who cannot help themselves and uses us to do it.

23. Well, I'm actually not a Democrat
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 10:12 PM by BreatheOnMe
I don't belong to the party. I've always had issues with joining groups. I prefer voting for someone because I believe they are the better option, not because I belong to their group. I just happen to agree with the Democrats on pretty much every issue so I vote for them. I can't understand voting for people (Republicans) who think the government is innately bad. It's like asking someone who hates kids to run a preschool...it just won't work. If I had to pinpoint one issue though, it's probably my believe that the Democrats are the best hope for gays to achieve equality.
