Top 5 Senators I'd Love To See Replaced In November
They say we could pick up as many as 6-8 so I think 5 is a really safe bet. My top five pick for the quick good-bye.

Cornyn
Chambliss
Dole
Coleman
McConnell

Yours?

82. Dole (R-DC)
My letter to the Charlotte Observer about Dole:

The citizens of DC have complained for years about not having a voting member in the Senate but in reality they have had one for the last six years. Elizabeth Dole is the ultimate Washington insider, having lived in DC longer than any sitting Senator except Robert Byrd.

Much like Ms. Dole I moved away from my home state over 40 years ago but I would never claim to represent the people of Kansas like she claims to represent us now in NC.

It is time to elect a Senator who will represent us, the people of NC, in the US Senate and Kay Hagan is just that representative we need.

79. Chambliss didn't win in 02, Diebold counted the votes.
Cleland was up by 8 points I think 4 days before the election, then lost by 5, a 13 pt flip. This is what I read in the papers after the election. It's also the first time elections were solely counted in cyberspace, no paper, no recounts, no audits, pure faith-based vote counting.

52. Why hasn't Smith changed parties?
He doesn't seem as hate filled as the typical republican and it seems to me that changing parties would help him get re-elected. I know absolutely nothing about Oregon politics, so if this is a really stupid question, I apologize.

75. Smith is a douche
He tries to pretend like he is a moderate and level-headed guy while running one of the ugliest campaigns in the country. The attack ads on his opponent (Jeff Merkley) borderline on outright contempt for the intellect of the electorate. He votes with Bush most of the time, and when he decides to go rogue it is because the public opinion in Oregon has shifted against him.

I've been waiting 4 years for my chance to vote that asshat out of office.

78. Its an act
He spends 5 years being your typical pub, then 1 year playing moderate to try and siphon off just enough left side votes to get a win.

He is not, no matter what my republican friends would want you to believe, any sort of democrat. Although, I suppose with both of his cousins coming in on the D side in the senate, there might be some welcome for him if he wins and wanted to flip. I think that would be political suicide though. too many lefties know him to really draw us in, and the right only accepts him because he has won.

I think we all want McConnell out the most. As an Iowan with Minnesota roots, Coleman is more annoying to me. Chambliss is absolute scum, Stevens resembles scum, and Dole acts like scum.

So, McConnell, Coleman, Chambliss, Stevens, and Dole in that order.

10. He's not in the Senate but Sam Johnson
and the rest of the TX repuke congress critters.

There may be hope..in 2004 there was no Dem that ran against him and he got 86% of the vote, in 2006 we had a Dem running and Johnson "only" got
62.5% of the vote. Per Wiki, far less then his previous wins of 80%.

This year, our county has had HUGE Dem turnout..70,000 voted in the primary (up from 6,000 in 2004) and 23,000 new voters since this year's primary.
That 86% win of his was only 178,099 votes so maybe we stand a chance???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Johnson

He is the TX version of McCain with his bombing jokes. From Wiki:

On February 19, 2005 at a veterans' pancake breakfast at Suncreek United Methodist Church in Allen, Texas, Johnson relayed a conversation he had with President George W. Bush in which he claimed the WMDs may still exist, that he expressed concerns that such weapons might be in Syria. The decorated Vietnam combat pilot even joked that he would personally volunteer to fly a jet over Syria and drop two nuclear bombs. <6>

14. We need more senate, House and gov threads around here
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:41 PM by Awsi Dooger
That's one thing I really miss from the old DU, the focus on every facet. We used to have detailed analysis of every race. Now it's 99.99% presidential. I guess once we took over the majorities we take it for granted and don't care as much about the specifics.

Anyway, the senate race I'm worried about is Alaska. Stevens may be in trouble but that state is heavily red, more than we want to concede. Palin on the ticket means McCain is a lock to carry the state and it will require a ton of ballot splitting for Begich to prevail. Plus, that state always polls much more favorable to Democrats than it actually votes. That has been true every year I've followed closely, beginning in '96. There's no way Begich really has a big lead and many recent polls have it close.

37. I was thinking about that
There were several Senate races in '04 that looked favorable, but in the end people just ended up voting straight party in very red states like SD, NC, OK, KY, SC, LA (and to a lesser extent FL). God that was a disappointing night! Granted that was also the year many southern Dems were retiring.

We're not nearly as weak this year. We're much closer to '06 than we were to '04, but AK may follow the same trend as the others I mentioned above. That's too bad. Stevens really has to go. It's shocking people could even consider putting him back into office!

BTW, what do you think of the numbers this year? OH seems to be somewhat stubborn, while I see better chances for Obama in VA and maybe even FL. I'm most fascinated and hopeful about VA and NC, not to mention IN (though I'm less confident about it than the other two). Obama seems to have a good shot at CO, and IA and NM look almost locked down for him.

What are your models showing you?

41. I'm behind on the senate and gov races compared to previous cycles
Only in the past two weeks have I started to put things together on Excel. We need to win the tight gov races, like Perdue in North Carolina. In 2010 our prospects in the gov races aren't great, since we now hold many unlikely offices like Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona, Wyoming. I'd like to keep the majority there after 2010, although admittedly it is more comfortable than meaningful, certainly not like having the majority in the senate.

I agree with your assessments, especially being closer to '06 than '04. Many senate seats like Colorado appear to be all but certain. I'm also very confident in New Hampshire, Shaheen over Sununu in the rematch. The key voting blocks in that state have really shifted our way. Only in the past few days have I started to work on North Carolina, getting rid of Dole.

For Obama, I don't think Indiana is really in play. Too many conservatives. I use that as a trump card and with 40+% self-identified conservatives it would take an avalanche to yank Indiana. In North Carolina it's similar but to lesser degree. Obama can win if he maintains a 6+ national lead. But when I drop him to 5 or less, that state gets away.

Iowa and New Mexico are all but over. Colorado is not as much of a given as we want to estimate. That 10 point poll yesterday was bunk. That state depends on white women and Obama is hardly certain to pull them in sufficient number to make it easy. He generally trails polling among white women nationwide, and that demographic figures to be very close to 50/50, given the national margin. Perhaps a slight McCain edge. In a state like Colorado, with very low percentage of blacks and relatively low hispanics, white women make up nearly half the electorate.

My models basically ignore statewide polls. I realize that's atypical but it works for me. I look at national polling and adjust the individual states based on historical relationship to the national margin, the percentage of liberals/conservatives/moderates, and key swing demographics like white women and hispanics. I fully expect the race to naturally tighten and be decided by 2-4 points.

47. I read earlier today that Dole, Chambliss and Coleman are on their way out
the door. I sure do hope so.

Your list works for me. I'd like to see a few others gone.

I'm still celebrating the loss of DeLay, Frisk, and Santorium - those were class-A assholes.

in the Hagan/Dole race. They've given up on Dole winning.

Depending on timing, either by Governor Minner (D) or our next Governor Markell (D) (term limited race and the R is unlikely to win).

76. I love that too but as I said upthread

we don't have a real Democrat running against him, just a rethug that switched parties so he could run against him. His biggest brag is that he's more conservative than Graham, how's that for a bite in the hiney?

Maybe we can get rid of DeMint in 2010? He isn't any better.

Ted Stevens also needs to go. I could do without him.

Gordon Smith needs to go, too. I could do without him, as well.

John Sununu? Wouldn't miss him one bit. He can go.

Pretty much all of them, actually. Your 5 plus all the other GOP Senators.

Also several GOP House members. Actually, all of the GOP House members.

80. I do not believe the "official" story of Wellstone's death.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 07:01 AM by Raster
I also believe that Wellstone would have been THE major thorn in cheney*/bush*'s side and doubt the Congressional authorization for the illegal and immoral Iraq war would have skated through a complicit Congress. Further I believe Wellstone would have exposed the Patriot Act for what it was: a critically flawed piece of "legislation" rammed through Congress on the backs of fearmongering and innuendo.

Two-faced Coleman is a cheap imitation of Senator Paul Wellstone and a slap in the face to every citizen of the great State of Minnesota. Mr. Coleman, Senator Wellstone was one of my political heroes. And you sir, are no Senator Wellstone.

Wake Up, America!:kick:We Can Do Better!

96. I guaranee that if Paul Wellstone had lived, cheney*/bush* would NEVER have been able
to railroad through some of their trademark travesties. Senator Wellstone WAS the kink in their plans. He would have been vocal and loud about their attempted illegal activities. Wellstone would have challenged them at every turn. Wellstone was the biggest thorn in their side in the Senate.

89. I'll add one
Pat Roberts, who has done so much to enable and cover up the Bush crimes.

The polls show him ahead, but I think he's worried about the new registration in KS and a highly motivated turnout for Obama. He's actually running ads and making robo-calls to Democratic households so perhaps his internals aren't all that great.

A former KS congressman, Jim Slattery, is running against him. If you can drop a couple of bucks into his campaign bucket to help us get rid of one of the worst Bush capos in the Senate maybe we can throw the bum out.
