6. Chris Matthews has been in Obama's corner and Team Obama is returning the favor.
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:10 PM by ClarkUSA
Do you really think Obama's campaign is stupid? Or do you think they recognize an ally when they see/hear one?
And what if President Obama would like to get rid of another Republican senator in 2010, this time by supporting
a friendly Democrat - namely, Chris Matthews - to run against Sen. Spector of PA? Who are you to say this is a bad
idea? What's wrong with ambition? Especially if it is supported by the DNC and Obama himself, as it obviously is?

What's with the chip on your shoulder about Matthews? Isn't it enough that he's repeatedly compared McCain to a
troll after both of the last presidential debates? Guess you'd rather have someone with less star power run against
a powerful incumbent Republican senator like Spector? :eyes:

Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:41 PM by 4themind
He'd also have the name recognition and associated money raising to make a good run for it and perhaps better than some of the more progressive alteratives like Joe Hoeffel was (which isn't a knock on him) but its sometimes hard to find the combination of excellent progressive values and political talent/fundraising power but if there are other candidates out there 'd be welcome to seeing what they have to offer first.

14. I want to increase our Senate majority and I believe Matthews can do that in 2010.
His views are far less outdated than Spector's. Spector spent most of his time as head of the Senate Judiciary Committee
playing wink-wink-nod-nod with Alberto Gonzales, as I recall.

12. A moderately liberal Democratic Senator is exactly what's a good fit for the state.
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:42 PM by ClarkUSA
Take a good look at the Democratic state reps and senator PA already has and you'll see what I mean.

And I doubt that Tip O'Neill's former chief of staff and President Carter's former speechwriter is a DINO. He just has to
play Devil's Advocate occasionally on MSNBC and even then, he recently got demoted from debate duty along with KO
for his evident bias towards Obama. I assure you, Republicans do not see Matthews as a fellow "Rethug in DINO clothing."

Anyway, I will trust Team Obama on this. My goal is to knock out as many Republican senators as possible under an Obama
administration and it looks as if this seat will be a good get. I detest Spector. Matthews will be a great improvement and
will be loyal to President Obama and his party as senator.

7. He's trying to sound like a Democrat
It's been blatant for the past month or more. He knows if he wants to win the Democratic primary he has to be at least acceptable to the netroots crowd. The last thing everyone will remember is his emphasis during fall 2008.

21. I wouldn't vote for that turd if he was the second coming of the Lord himself.
Of all the good ole frat boys who delighted in trashing Hillary during the primaries, Tweety tops the list as the biggest sexist asshole of his entire crappy network. You couldn't pay me to watch that sorry excuse of a "news" channel. To think of that guy running for office is beyond offensive. Besides, what qualifications does he have, besides being an embarrassment with his "tingling leg" comments?

22. I see that you are still grinding that axe.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 09:52 AM by ClarkUSA
:nopity:

Unlike some, Matthews' qualifications are more than just being the spouse of an officeholder. He was chief of staff to the most
storied and longest-serving Democratic Speaker in modern history, Tip O' Neill. That means he knows more about how the
Congress works than 99.99% of Americans. It's experience that should serve him well as senator.

As for his tingling-leg comments, it shows Matthews has good taste in stirring oratory and good judgment in candidates' ability
to stir people's hopes for the future. Considering he was President Jimmy Carter's speechwriter, I expect he knows a little
something about good wordsmithing and terrific delivery. Furthermore, his joking admiration for one of Obama's better efforts
was funny and certainly nothing to be embarrassed about, unless you were a bile-filled supporter of his primary opponent or
are a bile-filled supporter of his general election opponent.

23. Oh please, Tweety is an embarrassment.
So, having been a speech writer a million years ago qualifies someone to be in the US senate? Good to know......

BTW, that "spouse" happens to be a sitting senator with almost 8 years of service under her belt.

24. Team Obama doesn't think so. Neither does Gov. Rendell or Mayor Nutter or the PA Dem delegation.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 10:11 AM by ClarkUSA
I think I'll side with the pros who are running the winning campaign. Like Team Obama and the PA Democratic delegation,
I want Sen. Spector to be put to pasture. I can't wait to work towards that end, no matter who the Democratic candidate is.

<<So, having been a speech writer a million years ago qualifies someone to be in the US senate?>>

You're deliberately ignoring the fact that he served as Tip O'Neill's chief of staff, which makes him perfectly experienced
enough to run for the Senate.

<<BTW, that "spouse" happens to be a sitting senator with almost 8 years of service under her belt.>>

When she first ran for the Senate, her biggest "qualification" was that she was the political-celebrity-spouse of a rock star/
former prez.

25. "Team Obama" should be grateful.
MSNBC might as well have hung a sign that said "Official Obama network" ever since the primaries.

Look, I obviously do not object to PA having a Democratic senator, I just object to that senator being a sexist jerk of the first order. I live in neighboring NJ, but if I lived in PA he would never get my vote. I would actively campaign for any other Democrat who went for that position against Tweety. The thought of that guy in the senate is appalling, and I doubt that I'm the only one who feels this way.

As for Tip O'Neill, he would have been shocked to see what an asshole Matthews has become.

26. Team Obama earned every bit of respect it gained during the primaries.
Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 12:14 AM by ClarkUSA
You really need to stop sounding like Lady Forrester de Rothschild. Your bitterness is evident in every
poison-pill post of yours. Reliving the primaries through skewed sensibilities is not a pretty sight for
the rest of us who are focused on moving ahead.

As for what Tip O'Neill might think, I suspect he'd endorse Matthews for Senate 2010 if he were still alive.
I like Matthews' excellent coverage of the general election. He's a big reason McCain is being nailed to
the wall lately and I appreciate his coverage. If he doesn't run for office, I certainly hope he continues
to cover the political scene under an Obama administration.
