I'm ringing the town bell and blowing the horn. Why is nobody talking about being prepared for violence on election night?!?
With the right-wing ugliness that has finally reared it's hooded head, I wonder if law enforcement agencies are prepared for mobs in the streets come election night.
A quick Google search pops up many references to rioting if Obama loses. If the numbers the polls show now hold up through election eve and Obama still loses then there damn well better be riots in the streets protesting blatent election fraud.
But what if Obama goes on to win in a landslide like we see happening right now? Will there still be angry mobs but whiter and with less actual teeth than the other scenario?
I really think this issue should be elevated to a national dialog. Local law enforcement agencies, the National Guard and federal agencies should start making statements about their ability to not just gaurentee the safety of a President-Elect Obama, but all people of color who could suddenly find themselves victims-by-proxy of some brainstem redneck trying to cope with their terror.
Right now, the onus is on John McCain and Sarah Palin to stop stirring up fear and hatred at their campaign stops and with their media blitz and to come out loud and clear against the racist and violent threats. I don't see that happening. We can't ignore that there could be a dangerous evening ahead.
