Biden surprises book shop patrons in Liberty, Mo.

Joe Biden stopped at the "By The Book" store on Liberty's town square for just shy of a half hour today.

A local bought his coffee, but Biden sprung for his own cookie and chewy bar. The total was $2, even.

Chris Todd, the owner of the place, got about three minutes warning before Biden showed, and was thrilled with the visit.

The veep was on his way to a rally at a nearby gymnasium. He chatted with a few customers, then his handlers shooed the media from the store and he spent 15 minutes talking to local merchants, who had heard about the visit and filed in to meet him.

Todd: "He acted like he would have stayed in there the whole afternoon if he could have. People asked him about health care and tax cuts. I was impressed. He answered in real specifics."

1. "Because I might die." -- Clinton on his choice of Gore
Interesting anecdote in the comments thread to that post. I'd never heard this before:

Great, genuine guy...

...is Joe Biden. He may talk a lot -- but then, he knows a lot to talk about.

If the best way to judge a candidate for President is his first appointment, the VP choice, Obama sure beat McCain on that one.

When Bill Clinton told his staff that he was going to choose Al Gore, the choice was questioned on political grounds. Why chose another white Baptist southerner who would bring no political strength to the ticket?

Clinton answered in four words: "Because I might die."

If disaster strikes, who would you want to see in the Oval Office? Biden or Palin. No contest.
