That is almost NEVER done on an emergency bsis! Bill undergoes checkups much more often than most people, and clogged arteries (the reason for by-pass) is always detected way before and emergency arises. Get a grip here folks.

it is the clot that can form in a few short hours or even minutes. The plaques breaks off and the inside of the vessel becomes irritated. Then one day whammo, a clot happens and you are in trouble.

My Dad had emergency triple bypass in July after just having a complete cardiac workup in March that came back fine.

The only way to really know the extent of any blockages is to do a cardiac catheterization - a fairly invasive diagnostic test that isn't typically done in routine checkups. Typically it is ordered only when something specific warrants it - complaints of chest pains, for example.

My guess from what I've heard is that Mr. Clinton went in with chest pains, they did the cardiac cath, and ordered the bypass. The GOOD news is that they caught it before it could do any further damage. That is good news.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Former president Bill Clinton, after experiencing chest pains, is to have heart surgery for a quadruple bypass, media reports said Friday.

CBS News and CNN reported that Clinton, a former Arkansas governor, had gone to Columbia Presbyterian hospital in Manhattan with complaints of chest discomfort. ABC News said the former president would have a quadruple bypass on Friday.

I worked with a guy who underwent quintuple bypass, and he's in worse shape than Clinton could ever be. Also a heavy smoker.

The surgery was a success, though he had to take time off work.
