Obama's stance of wanting to be diplomatic but tough with every one of our enemies is so apparent when this happens... McCain comes across as a hard-liner, and Obama comes across as reasonable... the whole point of attempting to engage your enemies and discovering that they aren't willing to work towards common ground is to get your FRIENDS to see that you're trying to do the right thing.

That's what Obama did by trying to shake McCain's hand, and now a lot of independents have seen that McCain is pretty heartless and not very "professional." He's obviously a man who holds a great big stinking shitpile grudge.
