Quick question for those watching the CNN meter
Does the "approval" line begin at the END of the meter? In other words, when a line first emerges, is it consistent with what the candidate has just begun to say? It's kind of hard to tell what the reaction is to specific statements when I don't really know what the meter reflects. Thanks!

4. There's a tiny lag
Watch what they say, the meter should reflect it within a second or two--easy way to gauge the lag is wait for a big money line and wait for the change (or how long it takes to go back to neutral when Brokaw introduces the next question).

12. I think it's pretty well synchronized to the feed. I does take a second or two for respondants...
to react. So there's a slight delay, but it's probably largely human induced.

13. Observations:
1. it's hypnotizing
2. uncommitted voters don't like personal attacks
3. they would love to see defense spending cut
4. fairness in taxation is not important to men
5. neither candidate should mention the other, apparently

14. Yep. Here's how it works.
One of my department's faculty uses this exact same technology in his research, and I've played with it a bit. It's pretty cool/fun.

The users have a scale of 1-100, set on a handheld dial. 50 (midline) is neutral; anything below the midline=bad, anything above the midline=good. It looks like the focus group has been instructed to reset to 50 when Brokaw says something or when an audience member asks a question.

You're seeing the reactions in real time. What's happening on the right-hand side is what's going on now. (Notice that people are reacting to words and phrases a lot of the time.) The overall view gives you an idea of the patterns in which people are reacting.

I can actually tolerate listening to McStupid with the lines, because I can get distracted by how people are responding. Hopefully this helps you, too!

16. Thanks!
It seems like the indys aren't too happy when a candidate attacks the other. I'm really surprised at some of these alignments!

15. You can tell where it starts just by looking at it
When it goes up, it means Obama just started to speak. When it goes down, McCain just said, "My friends . . ."
