Coming on the heels of John McCain whipping up a crowd of supporters who called Obama a "terrorist," and Sarah Palin getting her audience to yell "Kill him!" (apparently about Obama), we now find out that Sarah Palin's mob of supporters yesterday turned on a black journalist and yelled "racial epithets" at him while telling him to "sit down, boy."

Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

"Having been raised in the South and being familiar with our neighbors to our south, I could just about promise you that it wasn't "negro". It would have been "nigger".

All jokes aside, if a white person approached a black person in a public place and was going to call that black person a racial slur...no one should believe negro is that kind of racial slur. I've heard older white people call adult black people colored in Indiana and gal/boy in Virginia. Negro is right in line with all those phrases: colored, gal/boy, negro. Nigra or some version of 'nigger' is the insult.

Although I'd argue all the rest are like hanging out a sign saying you are not welcome, but none of them pack the fighting words punch like 'nigger.' A white person approaches a black person in a crowd of white people, it is a threat which has the import of being carried out in a lynch mob. Past is prologue.
