I'm not electing any more kids who think they have to prove something to their dads

I had 8 years of that - George Bush trying his damndest to prove he was as good as his old man. What better way than to get the job his dad once had (and was kicked out of.) Now we have John McCain, who has not just dad's legend to live up to but his grandfather's too, trying to do the same exact thing.

The only difference I can find between McCain and Bush is Bush was a drunk frat boy and McCain was a drunk soldier boy. Everything I read about McCain has him drinking heavily, screwing anything in a skirt and causing more trouble than good. Is this what I want for a president?

One thing about Barack Obama and is also true with Bill Clinton, is neither of these 2 people came from a privileged background. In fact BOTH of them came from a family where there was no father expectations to live up to since both were raised by single mothers. Eliminating that issue means both of these men could focus more on their country and less on telling their dad's "Look I'm as good as you are"

I swear to god I'm not voting for any more legacy kids unless they can prove they can do the job without trying to compete with their father. It's tough for me to say that because I'm in Delaware and we have the start of our own legacy family (Joe Biden's kid is already AG of DE - but the kid has a good head on his shoulders).

4. Excuse me, but I do believe John McCain's father is dead, as is
Bill Clinton's father and Barack Obama's father. In both of the latter cases, their fathers abandoned them. You don't think there might be a reason to prove that this abandonment that basically threw away two boys, who have both earned a place in history, was an abandonment of one eight year president and one possible president? I believe Obama has something to prove to his dead father and all of the brothers and sisters his father left behind. I'm not sure about Bill's father, that is whether he abandoned his mother, or died. I believe he was abandoned also. That said, I believe this is not a good reason to denigrate John McCain. I would think his years as a prisoner of war might have proven something to his father, but who can say for sure.

5. Just because someone is dead doesn't mean it idea goes away

Trust me - read the article.

What McCain is doing is something that had been ingrained into him since he was a kid. You don't undo that mentality simply because the person passes away.

7. But in the case of Bush and McCain...
both are the incompetent sons of fathers (and grandfathers) with outstanding military and political backgrounds. Each one has used his family's name to get to positions of power, despite their incompetence. They've each also used their families to get them out of trouble.

Bill and Barack got where they are due to their own smarts.

6. Agreed.
The Rolling Stone article about McCain is pretty damning. This daddy-fixation thing is unhealthy -- both for the kid who has it and for everyone and everything he touches.
