12. Some times it's not easy...but....

there are few tricks to the trade...and while most political out in the open cops are republican, there are man dems under the surface.

One gratifying thing I like to do is go go up to co-workers who are hard right and ask them when is the last time they've thanked a Democrat for their wages, benefits and working conditions (if I feel in a really combative mood I ask them when have they asked a socialist - then to really shut them off on this I ask them if they have any idea about the labor movement or know about Matawan).

These same people also refuse to believe several years ago Bush was wanting to cut overtime for public employees and that his budget cuts have severely limited our training and grants.

But the hardest thing of all is, most I see every day is a challenge to what I politically believe, while for conservatives and Republicans, it only reinforces what they believe.

You are surrounded by people that disagree with you all day, and then when you come to places like this, you have to deal with the fact that those who share your politics are not exactly known for being friendly towards LE. And I'm saying this as someone that has been tear gassed, pepper sprayed, and arrested at various anti-war protests. I want you to know that I really appreciate cops like you. I know it must be difficult and the fact that you soldier on makes me have a lot of respect for you.

As for the terrible things that I know you must see every day, the only words of encouragement I can give you are to remember that the desire for revenge, or to stop being compassionate, are the more primitive instincts in us. Conservatives openly embrace these primitive instincts. Fear, anger, retribution, hostility, jingoism, and indifference to human suffering, are basic cornerstones of the conservative philosophy. It takes greater strength to try and rise above these traits that we all have and seek justice and healing, not simply revenge. And it takes far greater wisdom and intelligence to try and understand why the bad things that happen in the world do happen, such as what makes our young people want to bring guns to school and kill, or how poverty and a history of racism has turned some of our neighborhoods into war zones.

As a cop you always show up at the negative climax of a sequence of events, such as, there's a body in somebody's bedroom. Your job would then be to piece together what happened in a criminal sense, but not in a sociological sense. Liberals are people that try and understand cause and effect instead of just action and reaction. It's a liberal idea that we live by egalitarian values such as choosing our leaders by voting instead of just clubbing our opponents over the head like our ancestors did. Whenever you find your beliefs strained by what you see, just remember that by remaining compassionate, cool-headed, and understanding, you are displaying the highest respect for the spirit of the law because the mere fact that we have laws stems from a desire to rise above our most basic impulses and seek a better, more just way.

I'm sorry that in the past, I have been guilty of some of the anti-LE sentiment on this board. I painted far too broad of a brush and it was just as reactionary and ignorant as all the things I'm lamenting now. So just know that I think it's awesome that you do what you do and still believe what you believe.

driving my yougest son to school, and as we passed the town hall, he said-

"too bad cops are stupid"-

I asked what had brought that on, and he said he saw a 'cop' on TV talking hate about Obama-
I didn't realize he'd heard the exchange- I told him the guy wasn't a 'cop' he was a "sherrif" and that he was just being a jerk-and not to judge all "cops" by the actions of one.

My son is one of only a handfull of AA kids in our town, and the only one at his school. The racist bigotry is growing more and more disturbing, and blaitent as Mccain gets more desperate.

But ignoring and pretending it doesn't exist only allows it to fester.


This election is vital for the survival of America.
