McCain: "Who Is The Real Barack Obama?" McCain Supporter: "Terrorist!"

By Greg Sargent - October 6, 2008, 5:37PM

After John McCain delivered the central question of his speech today -- "Who is the real Barack Obama?" -- the first, and loudest, supporter seems to yell:

"Terrorist!"

That's what John Aravosis and Marc Ambinder heard, and it does sound like it.

(Video clip here at link)

McCain seemed to pause, and didn't denounce the epithet. I'd argue that there's no way to arrive at a conclusive answer as to whether he heard it or not, short of asking him and getting a frank answer. McCain could have been pausing to admire the pith and artfulness of his smear, or to bask in the adulation it brought. And McCain is not responsible for what some whackjob yells at his rally.

That said, the moment is uncomfortably revealing: McCain is now dabbling in the tactics employed in the most viral smears of Obama, if not to the same degree. No honest observer would dispute that McCain's speech today was about sowing fears of Obama as a risky, unknown, and vaguely sinister "other," and this supporter, at least, read the subtext, intended or not, loud and clear. And when McCain delivered that line there was a gratified, even visceral roar from McCain supporters, as if this attack -- fear the alien in our midst! -- was the gloves-off moment they'd been waiting for.

In Fla., Palin Goes for the Rough Stuff as Audience Boos Obama

By Dana Milbank
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- "Okay, so Florida, you know that you're going to have to hang onto your hats," Sarah Palin told a rally of a few thousand here this morning, "because from now until Election Day it may get kind of rough."

You betcha. And the person dishing out the roughest stuff at the moment is Sarah Palin.

-snip-
It was time to revive the allegation, made over the weekend, that Obama "pals around" with terrorists, in this case Bill Ayers, late of the Weather Underground. Many independent observers say Palin's allegations are a stretch; Obama served on a Chicago charitable board with Ayers, now an education professor, and has condemned his past activities.

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"Boooo!" said the crowd.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.

"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

edit to add - I forgot to include this ALSO from Today:

"Barack Hussein Obama" ... It Is October, After All

ESTERO, FL - The sheriff of Lee County refered to the Democratic nominee as "Barack Hussein Obama" today as part of his introductory remarks before Sarah Palin spoke at a rally here.

"On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happend," Sheriff Mike Scott told the crowd at Germain Arena.

Scott was speaking as part of a program before Palin's arrival at the rally. Palin was at a fundraiser in Naples, Fla. at the time.

in your neck of the woods, Troy. The man is 72 years old and an Obama supporter. I hope you saw today's "Dayton Daily News."

4. It's dangerous...
words like this are all the validation any of their borderline freaks need to do something truly stupid. If, God forbid, any attempt at harm should befall Obama, Palin and McCain should be brought up on charges for inciting it.

12. Agreed 100%...
It's downright despicable to run a political campaign with a fellow Congressman accusing him of being a terrorist, which is what they are doing right now in a not-so-subtle manner. It is inciting paranoia.

7. "Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.
If one of us went to a McCain rally and yelled that McCain should be killed we would and should be arrested by the Secret Service.

So what is any action did the Secret Service take against this McCain supporter threatening Barrack Obama? I already think I know the answer!

13. Radical Fringe Terrorists. They forget they are behaving like terrorists themselves.
Funny how that works.

No different than radical Islamics, radical Christian Fundalmentalists and Zionists.

Someone should have snapped his photo and then photoshopped the word "Terrorist" as a caption.

She probably kept that frozen insane "end times a comin'" smile without flinching as she went on without interruption to rattle off another canned talking point.

20. Palin/McNuts have become totally desperate and are on the brink..
of in sighting some very dangerous behavior. The SS has to start monitoring this closely and apprehending some of those responding with "Kill Him" and other such threats. Perhaps this will have a calming effect.

24. One of the talking heads on MSNBC said this morning..
if Palin does everything the McCain camp asks her to do in the coming weeks, her political career will be over. I'd say that's about right from the sounds of what was coming out of her mouth today. Of course she's too stupid self-involved and vain to understand that.

31. Lol! You're the first person to catch the John Mosby reference!
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 04:21 PM by greyghost
Actually I live in the heart of Mosby's Raiders old playground. My great, great grandfather was the youngest captain in the CSA and was on Robert E. Lee's personal staff. I'm named for him and there's a road named after him near the Manassas battlefield.

However, when I picked the handle (which I use on several sites) I was thinking of the Dennis Quaid movie, "Everybody's All-American." His character is Gavin Grey, The Grey Ghost, who is married to Babs, played by Jessica Lange. What can I say, I played football and always had a thing for Jessica Lange.
