Va. GOP Fears McCain Could Lose The State
<snip>

Virginia Republicans are warning that John McCain's prospects for winning a state that has been in the GOP column in every presidential election since 1964 could be in jeopardy. With Barack Obama treating the Old Dominion like a battleground state and reliable polls showing a margin-of-error race there, some are cautioning that McCain is making a critical mistake by allowing the Democratic nominee to outpace him in terms of visits and resources committed.

The two best indicators of which states the campaigns are serious about – time and money – tell the story.

Since wrapping up the Democratic nomination in June, Obama, his wife, Michelle, and his running mate Joe Biden have visited the commonwealth a combined 12 times. The candidate himself was in the Tidewater city of Newport News Saturday.

Obama is also plowing millions into Virginia, blanketing the airwaves with TV and radio ads, filling up mailboxes with leaflets and, along with the state party, operating 49 campaign offices.

Together, McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, have held just one campaign event in Virginia. And the campaign has taken its ads off the pricey Washington, D.C. network affiliates that reach into the entire swath of the Northern Virginia, the commonwealth’s most populous region.

“I think needs to get here,” said Rep. Tom Davis, a longtime member of Congress who represents a Northern Virginia district. “I think they’ve got to pay more attention.”

1. McCain is being campaigned into the ground. He cannot personally be everywhere he needs to be.
The wheels are coming off McCain's wagon and he is running out of gas.

5. not to mention that, due to the inexperience of his running mate........
Edited on Sun Oct-05-08 02:29 PM by tulsakatz
...they usually appear together at the same rallys, even now!! If he had a more experienced running mate they could campaign separately and cover twice as much ground!

their plan is to next week campaign together after the debates next week. This is very stupid but Palin is drawing more attention them him so he needs her to get the big crowed.

19. Exactly. Palin is tethered to McCain whereas Biden, Jill & Michelle
can be 2 other places in addition to the main Obama stops. We are out-pacing them financially and geographically.

The clock is running out and their bank is running dry.

like given interviews in Iowa and being an asshole and sending Palin to California.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he keeps it up, but McCain's strategy is a weird one.

34. Davis recently
'removed' himself from his position.

"The revolution is over, the thrill is gone and the Republican brand under President Bush has, in Davis’s view, been so tarnished that, as he likes to say, “if we were a dog food, they would take us off the shelf.” These will be Davis’s last few weeks in Congress. He decided against re-election, disaffected by the partisanship, by a process he calls broken, by a party he considers hijacked by social conservatives. “We’re just not getting much done,” he said."

8. Great Obama Ads
Obama ads everywhere today in Fl. Good ads about health care showing he has a moderate not radical approach to reform. And another good one talking about the financial consequences of McDebts proposals. And another about registering to vote.McDesparate only has one that is so lame talking about the so called 94 votes for tax increases. Old boring ad...not interesting at all.

10. Me Too

Thanks for the post. The MSM, in these kinds of articles, always seems to hedge their bets a little bit, don't they? In so doing, they seem a bit behind the electoral curve. Right now, I think Obama has Virginia sewed up - - and I never thought I'd say that.

VA is psychologically important, too - - since the polls there close at 7 PM Eastern, a declared win in VA could affect Colorado (which, with VA in the bag, doesn't really matter as much, but it's still nice for governance purposes).

It's like this: if ScottyRazz (now starting his usual moving-the-goalposts-to-reflect-the-trend act since he knows Obama is going to win) has Obama up in Virginia, he's up in Virginia.

12. I gotta say, outside of Northern VA, its almost all McCain signs...
I went driving for about 5 hours yesterday west and south of Northern VA in search of extra large pumpkins (I actually am an insane pumpkin carver - check out fantasypumpkins.com). While the Northern VA area (Fairfax county) where I live is a strong Obama area, with lots of offices, as I left Northern VA, there were McCain signs everywhere. Worst was when I went into a small town in search of pumpkins at a fair - frickin a 1/3 of the houses had McCain signs on them.

So yeah, Obama is gonna rawk in Northern VA, Hampton Roads and Richmond, but this hardly means its gonna be an easy win. McCain is in the hinterlands in force.

That said, we're averaging about 3-5 calls a week from the Obama campaign (nationally and locally). No McCain calls yet.

I drove I 81 last week and saw nothing but Obama signs. he is making in roads into the part of the state located next to NC and WV. I was suprized but after the drive the polls started turning in his favor in that area of the state

21. McCain has no one to blame but himself.
In reality, HE should be leading in this race, seeing as he secured his Party's nomination MONTHS before Obama did. That was his gift in this election and he blew it. He can't manage his money (I wonder if he'll supplement his election funds with illegal donations again), he doesn't know the political game as well as he should and he's surrounded himself with idiots. McCain shouldn't be hemorrhaging states the way he is and he's doing nothing to staunch the flow. I never thought the GOP could pick someone lazier than Bush. Ugh.

23. I dunno

Maybe the "gift" was that Obama had to campaign in the primaries in many more states than McCain did, and this contributed to building the organization that is now suffocating the McCain campaign.

What was he waiting for?

I guess it is an indication of how empty his campaign is that he had to wait around to see who he was going to run against, when he could have been promoting his own candidacy.

25. Obama just opened up a SECOND office in Richmond--West End Cantor territory
I mean smack dab in the middle of Republicanville (I live in it) he is trying to eek out a few votes here. Turning over every stone just like in the primaries.

McCain just opened up 12 NEW offices bringing his total in Va to 20...that's right he only had EIGHT offices in the entire state. Obama had 45 established.

McCain has to win Va. if they call Va. for Obama it is OVER
