Huge Swing in 60+ Demographic since Black Monday...

We posted this morning about the 60+ voter and how the poll numbers dramatically changed after Black Monday (9/15).

All the other age demos are solidly Obama

------MCCAIN- OBAMA-BARR NADER-OTHER- UND

18-29------28--- 64--- 0 --- 1 --- 2 --- 5
30-44------41--- 49--- 4 --- 2 --- 2 --- 2
45-59------43--- 51--- 1 --- 2 --- 2 --- 1
60+--------45--- 43--- 1 --- 2 --- 1 --- 8

I was reminded of this gem reported by John Dickerson at Slate on August 25.

The McCain campaign was working hard to drive a wedge in the Clinton coalition. Since Obama picked Joe Biden as his running mate, the McCain team has released two Hillary-themed ads. One claims Clinton was passed over for the No. 2 spot because she spoke the truth about Obama. In the second, a former Clinton supporter says she's voting for McCain. "If we get them we win; if we don't we lose," says a top McCain aide of the Clinton supporters.
So how's that going for them? Oh, wait.

The dates of note are 9/15 (Black Monday), the first Obama-McCain debate 9/26 (Ole Miss) and the Biden-Palin debate 10/2 (St. Louis.)

I'll let Willie Brown weigh in on the VP debate.

"She survived, but not in a substantial way. On the other hand, she didn't harm the ticket, either. The harm had already been done by the Couric interviews. How do you not come up with which newspapers you read? Be honest. She reads the Star. She gets it at the 7-Eleven. It wouldn't have been the politically correct thing to tell Couric, but it would have been honest.

The supermarket tabloids have not been kind to her, nor has SNL and David Letterman. The point of that is not to be mean, but to say that things do not happen in a vacuum (the economy, Bush's 22% job approval in the CBS poll, etc.) But the debates do seem to be having an effect, and not in a good way for John McCain.

The economy and health care is going to play heavily with over 60's.
Younger folks can rebuild their portfolios. Older folks don't have the time. Older folks also have more health concerns. Simple.

2. McCain will never get the over 60 group back. Never.
They saw what he did after black monday and made an irreversible judgement. "Erratic" is what they saw and Obama has pounded away at that point.

3. It scared the hell out of them!
They came face-to-face with the cold, stark reality of what four years of McCain would mean--four more years of the same old shit.

4. All you need to see about the true John McCain
And his attitude toward women - sexist, misogynistic, patronizing - is to realize how they thought they would pick up Hillary voters: By selecting a running mate whose only similarity to Palin was what kind of sex organs they have. Essentially, we can replace one woman with another, and the li'l dumplins won't notice.

5. Willie Brown is wrong.
She reads The National Enquirer, (Inquiring minds and all)

Obama needs to turn on the juice now and finish this off with a landslide.

The bigger we landslide the more likely we get a health care system, a college finance system, and the basic changes we need to survive.

7. An Obama landslide won't bring the things we need.
A Congressional landslide is what is needed to even get the right bills to his desk.

6. Wow. That's pretty dramatic.
And I expect that the 60+ women made up a large % of that shift to bring it down like that.

9. They just saw a huge drop in their 401k
and realized that retirement will be later than anticipated. They don't have the time to recover.

12. My 76-year-old lifelong Republican dad just told me he's voting Obama/Biden this year...
This is a guy who once thought Truman was wrong to fire McCarthy.

The tide is turning. It can't be stopped.
