"Blacks belong underneath, not on top." Racism in Pennsyl-tucky
The area discussed in the Pittsburtgh Post Gazette article is one of THE most racist and hateful parts of this country. I am ashamed that these assholes live in my state.

From an article on people in the reddest of the red parts of Pennsylvania, er Pennsyltucky:

McCain strong in border county

<snip>

Now Mr. Hiller is trying to restore civility to the political climate in a county that gave President Bush 76 percent of the vote in 2004, the highest percentage of any county in the state.

Set in the Allegheny Mountains on the Maryland border, Fulton County, population 14,261, is the crimson base to Pennsylvania's famous Republican 'T.'

Though the county's Democrats have been more visible this election cycle and polls show Mr. Obama's lead increasing statewide, interviews with dozens of residents last week showed overwhelming support for Mr. McCain and deep reservations about Mr. Obama.

"Obama's got two strikes on him before he even gets to the plate: 1. He's black. 2. He's a Muslim," said Charles Sipes, 68, of Harrisonville, repeating an oft-cited but untrue rumor about Mr. Obama's religion. "This country was based on white people, not blacks. Blacks belong underneath, not on top."

<end snip>

I don't believe it was rebuilt. What a shithole it was.

Note, this was the Pechin's in Dunbar. If they rebuilt or relocated, then this is news to me.

4. How's that going to work for Mr. Sipes when China decides to come and settle in the
country it bought? I'm supposing Mr. Sipes would rather practice his Chinese, than see a better tomorrow.. But on a broader point.. the President is our worker, we're the boss, so in a sick way, the President is on the bottom, and WE are on the top... Racist mofo.

19. Ignorance is BLISS after all
As a sista, I have learned to not get upset about the ignorance of man

I remember in NJ when people got their panties in a bunch because a black was runner up to play jesus in a community play. The man go death treats and it garnered national attention.

During an interview he was asked how he felt about all this. In a calm rational manner
he smiled and quoted Jesus
"forgive them father, for they know not what they do."

Wether you are a believer or not, those are words to live by when you hear pitful ignorance like this. These people are sad, they don't even realize the damage they do to themselves with this thinking

42. What you said, actually, is the core difference between authoritarians and democrats, small-d
Authoritarians believe the president is "on top".

Racism is inherently authoritarian. If you think some people are automatically below you, then you buy into the existence of a foreordained hierarchy, where people have their places (irrespective of their abilities and irrespective of freely chosen relationships among people). Racists are natural monarchists or fascists. They are not democrats (small d).

Those who believe in freedom don't believe in God-given, foreordained, hierarchies, but in a fluid mix of meritocracy and relationships freely entered into by free people. In this point of view there is no "bottom" for those of other colors, genders, sexual preferences, and other differences to occupy. Nor is there a "top": in a democracy, the President is an employee contracted to administer the government: he or she is not "above" anyone or anything.

The two ideas, that the President is "on top" and African Americans are supposed to be "on the bottom" are of one piece. They're the views of a loyal subject of a king, or a fanatical follower of a dictator. They, unlike Barack Obama, are un-American.

(Of course, the Founders left us with a principle and a framework, not a fully-realized democracy, and subsequent generations, including ours, have had to continue the work of the American Revolution. People like Mr Sipes are proof the job is not done).

5. Dang! They must be SO proud.
:puke:

Frankly, I think people with the mentality of charles sipes, 68, of Harrisonville - who spread lies and firmly cling to them, and embrace the "blacks belong underneath, not on top" mentality - are the ones who REALLY "belong underneath, not on top."

The WORST of the American underbelly - the underbelly that, like the knuckles, still drags the ground.

Once you lose the Pittsburgh stations, you can't pick up much of anything on the radio but Rush and Hannity. That's where these people get their 'news'.

Evidence:

"I wouldn't vote for Obama because he'd raise capital gains taxes," said Mr. Palmer, of Dott. "I'd have to go on assistance."

They're not stupid, they're brainwashed.

That way I can form my own opinions based on the widest array of information.

To only seek out information from Rush or Fox is stupid...just as stupid to only watch Countdown or read DU.

With all the variety of ways to get info today, I have no tolerance for those who are willfully 'incurious' and intellectually lazy.

21. Kerry took PA in '04,
and where I live in the Philly suburbs there are Obama signs everywhere, but I can't deny that there are parts of this state that I'm not very proud of.

My father came from out in the western coal regions near Punxsutawney (of Groundhog day fame) and we used to visit my grandparents for a week every summer. On the surface (at least to a child) the people in that area seemed to be sweet loving people but every now and then some awful, ignorant, racist statement would come out of one of the local residents that would show what was below the surface. Of course, not everyone was like that - the fact that I recognized the ugliness of such statements shows that my father was different - and I also saw plenty of it right here at home (and still do) but there's no denying that it's a much greater problem in those parts of the state.

I realize that the root cause is ignorance and poverty but I find it hard to excuse this particular brand of ignorance.

Yes, it is redneck central over there. Franklin County where I live borders Fulton. Franklin isn't much better. They had a McCain rally at a church in St. Thomas 7 miles from me. Is that illegal for a church to get involved in promoting a candidate? If so, who do I report them to?

33. We have lived here on 3 acres for 28 years, and only know our neighbors across the road, and
a few others in our tiny town. The church who did this had 30 people attending. Will they know who reported them to the IRS? I don't know anyone at this church, and I don't think anyone in my town attends there.

We came here from Ohio,San Francisco and Rhode Island. My husband has a PhD, I have a MA, so the compatibility level is rather low here. But there are a lot of very self-sufficient folks here with a great deal of knowledge of how to be so. When we first met our neighbor, he noticed that we had a good telescope and were looking around our solar system. He came back and said he guess that was OK, there was nothing in the bible against it!

"I wish would have gotten zero (votes) from Pennsylvania for saying that," Gerald Chalupka, 60, said with a chuckle as he did some shopping at the Dollar General in McConnellsburg.

That's right, Mr. Chalupka. Continue voting against your own economic self-interest, continue cheering the corporate greed that's run the last large employer in your county just dumped a whole bunch of people from their pay rolls. When the actual Depression hits, which will likely blossom during an Obama presidency, this jerk will blame Obama and long for the days when the Repukes kept prices low. :eyes: :puke:
