The best way to fight attacks is to redirect them and make them hurt themselves. How do you do that? not by "fighting fire with fire" and devolving the conversation into a defense of Ayers principles then vs. now, or a comparison of Obama/Ayers vs. Todd Palin/AIP but "fight fire with water" by firstly stating what these attacks clearly are, desperate, factually incorrect, and meant to change the subject away from the economy, then PIVOT to discussing why he's so desperately avoiding talking about the economy, and if the american people DESERVE to hear more about the economy. That any time McCain is attacking him, its time not spent talking to "you" about how you will pay YOUR bills and how you will afford YOUR health insurance, and how you can save YOUR home.

America NEEDS solutions, not more attacks. It's been a long time since democrats have had the lead this late in the race, and with a candidate with the recognition that Obama has (combined with the fact that there's no sitting president) he has greater power than kerry or perhaps even gore to DICTATE the narrative. In this sense his star power and his ability to draw ratings (by using his heft not to give interviews to people who continuously push Ayers-Obama connections) can be a boon in this campaign.
Obama draws attention in his own right, and he can use it to talk about the issues that are important and he can convince the american people WHY it is important to talk about these issues. This strategy, I believe, will cut away McCain's desperate attacks at the knees and get people asking "why are you talking about 40 years ago when I can't affoard my bills RIGHT NOW). We need to cast this Ayers-talk as completely irrelevant as if McCain started focusing soley on discussing NFL games. People need not to be asking "is what he's saying true" but "why are you talking about this at ALL right now, when I have all of these problems in my life" Republicans have already spent 10 million dollars trying to tie Obama to ayers and it has done virtually nothing and I predict that Palin's attempts will not have much more succuess, especially among independents(a group who she has ever dwindling influence on)
P.S. please forgive spelling mistakes , I have to run but I wanted to post this first.

1. Could not agree more..
I htink that is what they are doing right now. By letting it get out there now it loses its effect later in the race. So each time McCains team trys this the Obama people are going to talk about the ecomony.
