March 24, 1987: "McCain's a wimp," Keating replied. "We'll go talk to him."
CHAPTER VII: THE KEATING FIVE

By 1987, McCain had received about $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.

McCain also had carried a little water for Keating in Washington. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to delay new regulations designed to curb risky investments by thrifts such as Lincoln.

Despite his history with Keating, McCain was hesitant about intervening. At that point, he had been in the Senate only three months. DeConcini wanted McCain to fly to San Francisco with him and talk to the regulators. McCain refused.

Keating would not be dissuaded.

On March 24 at 9:30 a.m., Keating went to DeConcini's office and asked him if the meeting with the regulators was on. DeConcini told Keating that McCain was nervous.

"McCain's a wimp," Keating replied, according to the book Trust Me, by Michael Binstein and Charles Bowden. "We'll go talk to him."

1. Come on, goddammit! Give this post a rec!
This is the sort of muckraking we're supposed to bring to the forefront - NOT endless rounds of recrimination against OUR candidates!

2. The article documents the whole thing, too...
...I'm sure that among the overall percentage of people who "know about" the Keating 5 scandal, there's a much smaller group that knows everything in the article.

3. Yes, that's what makes this such a great article
I've learned things I never knew about the Keating 5 scandal, and it doesn't matter one bit that it happened over 20 years ago, since it's part of the same rush to deregulate that has gotten the economy to the sorry state it's in presently.

7. We know one thing about what to expect from McCain in the days ahead...
...and that's the fact that the attacks against Obama will continue. It's all a matter of how hard Obama wants to hit back, and how specific he wants to be. McCain dismisses it all as an "error in judgment," but the people who lost the most in this might disagree.

What's even more important in the article is the fact that McCain DID momentarily struggle with his conscience...hence the text I used in my O.P. subject line. The fact that he went against his conscience is telling. Maybe he was just afraid of getting caught. Maybe Keating was right, maybe he is a wimp. But what matters is that he knew exactly what he was doing, did it willingly, and now is running for president.
