Remember Scarlett O'Hara? The heroine from Margaret Mitchell's GONE WITH THE WIND could wrap men around her little finger. Scheming and manipulative, she was the ultimate survivor. She could get just about anything she wanted by batting her eyes and flirting. Though not particularly brilliant, she knew how to wield her femininity to make men do her bidding. And if they didn't immediately fall into line, she'd resort to histrionics or "poor little ole me" games. But behind the scenes, she was ruthless.
That's who Sarah Palin reminds me of: Scarlett O'Hara, a woman who's certainly one to be reckoned with. A self-centered and selfish woman who will do anything to succeed, no matter who she has to step on to make it to the top. She knows very well how to play the game between the sexes. Clearly, she's managed to charm John McCain and countless male Republicans who are too clueless to recognize they're being had.
But we women should know better. Surely we can recognize what kind of woman this is, because we've seen too many others just like her. You remember those girls, don't you? The pretty classmates who'd resort to winks and cutesy-pie antics to coax a better grade from their teacher. The girls who'd charm others to do her homework while we, the hardworking students, earned our grades the old-fashioned way -- with diligence and real scholarship.
I guess that's what really disgusts me about Sarah Palin. She reminds me of every girl who took the easy shortcuts, every woman who used her looks and her charm to achieve success. She's the worst kind of role model our daughters could have. She teaches every girl that one doesn't have to be well-informed or intelligent to succeed.
All you have to do is bat your eyes.
