NYT: Who You Callin’ a Maverick?
NYT

By JOHN SCHWARTZ
Published: October 4, 2008

There’s that word again: maverick. In Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican candidate, used it to describe herself and her running mate, Senator John McCain, no fewer than six times, at one point calling him “the consummate maverick.”

But to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch — and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive.

“I’m just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,” said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants.

...

Considering the family’s long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, “is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.”

“It’s just incredible — the nerve! — to suggest that he’s not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, ‘Oh, my God, he said it again.’ ”

“He’s a Republican,” she said. “He’s branded.”

7. Now I'm envisioning a "Branded" ad lol
with the word REPUBLICAN branded (preferably on McCain & Palin's butts) somewhere appropriate for an ad along with how many times he voted with Bush over the past 4 years ... then ending with Maverick??? You decide! A Bonanza theme could work with that.

9. That's a great suggestion for an ad, Sunny
The republicons have branded themselves with their lies, corruption and general FAIL -- an ad would bring that reality into the forefront of voter's minds...

3. Obama should bring this up. He should
talk about the Maverick family and how the word came into our vernacular. Obama should wreck the word and its usage for McCain.

6. He should have it ready in the next debate in case it comes up!
Just destroy McCain with it in the next debate. Americans will have a good laugh at McCain's expense.

5. Leno on Friday had a mock interview with Biden and Palin.
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 03:28 PM by bulloney
He would ask questions and insert video responses from the candidates.

He'd ask Palin what she calls herself and McCain.

"Maverick"

What's your favorite car?

"Maverick"

What's your favoriet Mel Gibson movie?

"Maverick"

What's your favorite James Garner 1960's show?

"Maverick"

You get the idea. Pretty funny.

I really wonder if Palin knows what "Maverick" really means and where the name originated. Just like I wonder if she knew what "achilles heel" means.

8. My cat's name was Maverick...
.. he was the best cat ever who really lived up to his name, and spent all the 8 lives before he finally left us for good. I hope he's resting in peace.

15. Noun, verb, POW. Noun, verb, maverick. Noun, verb, POW. Noun, verb, maverick. YAWN. How about
the problems of America? We are in two ground wars without enough troops to win either one of them and Main Street just handed Wall Street 3/4 of a trillion dollars without any way of knowing if it will be enough. Stick you lies and slogans somewhere else, k?
