If you have a kneejerk reaction to the word Florida, skip this thread

However, if you are more concerned with what is happening now and will happen in November that can and will hand the Presidency to Barack Obama, than with what happened a couple election cycles ago, please read on...

the ever-awesome St. Pete Times has a must read on the Biden/Palin debate:

Biden demonstrated a strong command of economic issues, health care and foreign policy. He cited specifics and offered unusually sharp responses, in contrast to his reputation for rambling answers. He made a coherent case against the Bush administration for its handling of the economy and the war in Iraq, and he effectively linked McCain's proposals to the unpopular incumbent.

Palin often talked in circles. In one sentence, she declared "darn right it was the predator lenders'' who have caused the economic crisis. Then she talked about the need for more regulatory oversight. Then she talked about the need for people to be responsible and avoid getting into debt.

At other points, she was absolutely incoherent. She lost herself in a rambling response about nuclear weapons. She was inarticulate at best about the causes of global warming — probably because she previously has questioned whether humans have contributed to the problem. Responded Biden: "I think it is man-made. … If you don't understand what the cause is, it's virtually impossible to come up with a solution.''
...

Palin was clear on at least one point, and the Obama campaign will wrap it around McCain. In a discussion in which Biden described Obama's plan to keep tax cuts for the middle class but not for wealthier Americans, Palin suggested she was not on board with such a "redistribution of wealth.'' That was an easy shot for Biden, who noted that helping middle class families in Scranton, Pa., and other places send their children to college is not a redistribution of wealth.
...

But the Alaska governor said nothing to reassure Americans she is prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

and the NYT published an interview with a local volunteer's boyfriend:

By DAMIEN CAVE
Published: October 3, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Jim Piccillo lost his job as a bank vice president in August, applied for food stamps to support his two young daughters and swore off a life of loyalty to the Republican Party. He now volunteers here in Pasco County for Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.

...

For Mr. Piccillo, 34, skepticism arrived with the Republican convention. After voting twice for George W. Bush, he said he was especially turned off when Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, mocked Mr. Obama’s early work as a community organizer.

“Those are the people I’m looking to for help,” said Mr. Piccillo, a former mortgage banker who said he had sent out 1,500 résumés without finding a job.

...

Pasco County is just one place where the Republicans’ experience is running up against the Democrats’ new arrivals. It was here, among the rural areas and exurbs north of Tampa, where President Bush ran up the big margins that helped push him to victory in 2004. Senator John Kerry, the Democratic nominee that year, did not open an office in the county, making the Obama outpost here in New Port Richey a novelty.

...

Steve Schale, Mr. Obama’s Florida campaign manager, said the results statewide had been encouraging. “We have 600,000 African-American voters who are registered to vote who did not vote in 2004,” Mr. Schale said.

Also mentioned in the article was that the initial Palin Factor had waned, and how Obama offices in the area were busier than McCain ones. This is getting so exciting down here! As tired as I am, not canvassing on Saturdays or phone banking weekly doesn't even seem like an option anymore.

Early voting begins the 20th of this month, and in 30 short days, Florida will officially be a bold and beautiful Blue!

note to the Debbie Downers and 'realists' who can't wait to chime in with how this election is going to be stolen in Florida and how we always screw up - your concern is duly noted. But with respect, I am volunteering in this swing area, and its swinging our way BIG! We no longer evote - we use optical scan, and a Bush is not in charge. TIA for your prayers/scorn/hatred/whining, though.

20. Don't go by the ST. Pete Times as any indication of what the rest of
Florida is doing. St. Pete Times is one of the most liberal papers in Florida and use to have the best investigative reporting articles, but I believe it was recently bought out by another paper. Unfortunately, they're not as hard hitting on local issues as they use to be.

21. I get it daily - its still a great paper
I'm trying to verify if it was recently purchased or not - it doesn't list that here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Petersburg_Times

The St. Petersburg Times is a daily newspaper based in St. Petersburg, Florida, that serves the larger Tampa Bay area. It has won six Pulitzers since 1964. It is published by the Times Publishing Company, which is owned by the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit journalism school in St. Petersburg directly adjacent to the University of South Florida campus in St. Petersburg.

you can get a free 2 week esubscription here if you want to check it out again, I love it.

3. So glad to hear it, i was appalled at what happened last time.
I'm glad Florida voters are beginning to see the light and feel the outrage of how their votes were stolen last time. I can't wait to see FL turn blue!

6. Spiro Igloo is coming to Clearwater on Monday. She is speaking
at Coachman Park, where they have Jazz Holiday. Tony Bennett is appearing there the evening of 10/16. A few thousand people turning out at such a big venue will look like a Cub Scout jamboree.
Obama drew 10 to 12 thousand in Dunedin (which abuts Clearwater) the Wednesday before last.

I wish her ill.

Florida will turn blue in November.

9. I am looking forward to crowd estimates of that Coachman rally
local radio today mentioned she was coming and 'tickets were still available'. I snorted out my coffee when I heard that.

14. Wouldn't it be nice if both Florida and Ohio go blue this time?
Talk about redemption.

I did three shifts of tabling at Ohio State this week. There's a lot of enthusiasm. And there are Obama tables everywhere. They have shuttles taking students to the early voting location. The OSU Obama office is right next to a tattoo parlor. I don't know why, but I just love that fact.

Thank you for everything you're doing in Florida.

18. Obama is working the airwaves
At least where I am in a very red part of Florida. It is almost nonstop Obama ads on the tube. I was watching an hour long show and there were 3 different Obama ads during the one show. Before it was all McCain.

Besides, I have yet to see one single McCain sticker around. There are only Obama stickers. Apparently, both the Repugs and Obama have been observing this. The GOP is already prepping to steal the vote in some parts.
