So what is Sarah Palin's wink supposed to mean?
Per Wikipedia:

The wink is an intentional facial expression made by briefly closing one or both eyes. A wink is a form of semi-formal communication, which indicates shared, unspoken knowledge.

A "naughty wink" can silently indicate a shared secret, such as if a salesperson gives a customer a brochure and says, "Here you go... it's free". Infrequently, it may also mean "got it" or "yes, I understand".

In Western cultures, women may wink to men they are interested in dating, but this has grown out of fashion, though still used occasionally. Winking is also done by men to women, often to convey a message of "I like what I see here" or "Hello, I am interested in getting to know you". In most male-female contexts, it has come to mean communicating explicit sexual intentions. A stranger male's winking at a woman is an explicit invitation for sexual act.

In Latin American cultures, winking is also a romantic or sexual invitation, but can also be used a casual sign of recognition or of acceptance of behavior among friends.<1> In Nigeria, winking is a signal for children to leave the room.<1> Many Asians, especially Chinese and Indian women, consider winking to be rude.<1>

Not all humans are able to wink voluntarily, and some can only wink one (usually the non-dominant) eye but not the other, while others are far better at winking one eye and find it awkward to wink the other.

1. George Bush winks, as does McCain on occasion. I think it's an inside joke considering
it's not exclusive to her. Almost as if by winking they're saying to the neocons, see these suckers are buying the bullshit you shoveled into my head.

3. Interesting take.
I wonder if its different coming from a podium to an audience vs. person to person.

A lot of women seem to be offended by it though.

2. Passive/agressive move. I am going to do/say something nasty, but don't take offense
because I am sooooo cute and sexy.

Alternatively: I am making a joke and if you get it you are on the privileged inside with me. If you don't you are a clueless idiot who doesn't matter at all.

5. Well she certainly was nasty...
Its too bad I didn't watch this, but only listened to it since I was at work at the time.

If she wasn't so painful to hear, I'd watch it again.

4. A wink says: "I'm not telling the truth"
When I thought about this after the debate I couldn't understand how McCain's campaign could be so stupid. You don't even need a body language expert to understand this one because the message she was sending was overt: don't worry about what I'm saying because it's all bullshit. You know know I'm lying and I'm winking to let you know that I know that you know that I'm lying. What a bizarre and cynical way to communicate to the American people, especially now when we have so many serious problems that need to be addressed.

6. It means she gets her way by flirting.
Seen it in business before, and it works on a surprisingly number of people. It makes people think they have a special bond with them, they share secrets. It is a way to by pass logic and go straight to the animal part of the brain.

7. I believe it's somewhat related to this wink:

LBJ gets a wink and a smile from Texas Congressman Albert Thomas immediately getting sworn in as POTUS following JFK's assassination.

8. It means "If you vote for me, the odds of your having sex with me go up"
Or at least, that's what Rich Lowry thought.

12. No wonder some women are offended huh?
What hell would be if some women have to spend the next four years with their guys gushing how hot Palin is.

19. I think Palin and her supporters show how deep sexism is in this country...
In more ways than one, I am so surprised at how deep this selection is based in sexism and how very little is being written about it in the mainstream media.

And I am saddened when intelligent conservative women get on the talking head shows and gush over this woman. I am embarrassed for them. Especially when they seem to be blind to what her selection means and is saying about America.

13. That if you pull the lever for her, she might just, you know, return the compliment.
It worked by the way. I've officially switched my support to the Republican ticket, but only on the condition that McCain dies.

21. I could see it one of two ways
the obvious one is sexual flirtation. But when I saw her do it, it seemed like she was being kind of cutesy like you would do if you were speaking to children. I have seen adults do this to children also, so it had a maternal type thing too. So her "shout out" was not just to those third graders, she was treating the whole country as third graders. With her intellect she has to go with whatever she can!

It's probably the closest any of them have gotten to having sex.
